Nintendo saved the gaming industry.
Reading this thread, and the posts of Killinger (whatever his/her name is), is a clear example of how brand loyalty worship clouds judgement. I mean reading those posts, I wonder if he/she really believes what they are saying, or doing it for the lulz.
FWIW, Nintendo created the industry today. Nintendo revived, standardized, and popularized the home console business. Even that dualshock you sleep with pray to at night is based off the standard that Nintendo created, with the Famicom and later Nintendo consoles, right down to that d-pad on it. The Famicom has the earliest and basic form of the current handheld controller, and Nintendo only expanded on that to INNOVATE (I know you love that word) and introduce the shoulder buttons, trigger button, and analog stick. Sony did what? Popularized the disc based medium? I wouldn't call giving third parties a platform away from Nintendo "industry changing". Mature games and third parties have been around since I've been playing on the NES and Genesis, and will be around a lot longer than Sony. Sony just took Sega's seat (that other company) in the industry. Nothing more.
Do we even need to discuss the other side of the coin, handheld gaming?

How do you explain the millions of portables sold every gen by Nintendo. Only kids? Only Nintendo fans? Wii fad (please don't say yes to this)? Honestly your post is full of the dumbest generalization. For the record I think that this type of post should not be tolerated anymore. Not because it's you, just in general. It's getting out of hand how easily stupid things can be said on here. |
Your reply is pretty dumb. Nintendo fans buy Nintendo products. There are clearly millions of Nintendo fans so I don't get why you brought that up. Nintendo games MAINLY appeal to a certain audience. It's a known fact, sorry if you cannot handle that. Sales of 3rd party games and the actions of other companies back my claim. Wii was a fad. From nes to GameCube, Nintendo consoles sold less and less. They hit a good mark with wii and now wiiu is back to the N64 and GameCube numbers. I'm not bashing Nintendo, I'm stating facts. Saying Nintendo is looked at as kind of a little kid's machine isn't bashing because ALOT of people look at it like that. If you cannot see this then you're just some blind Nintendo fan. Post like mine shouldn't be tolerated? Your post are attacking people and mine aren't. I've seen a lot of crazy things posted about sony and ms. Where were you then? Stop crying, at the end of the days it's videogames. Have a good one

Nintendo would have had us crawling on our backs like beasts of burden. No thanks. Thank god for competition.

With all the people hating on them irrationally, I wouldn't be surprised if they would indeed be proud if they happened to read my posts. :) Nintendo makes great games, and their history proves it. I'm sad that despite the evidence people constantly repeat the same garbage, that Nintendo makes games for kids, that Nintendo games only sell to Nintendo gamers (where did they come from in the first place then?) or that Nintendo is irrelevant in the industry. I'm sad that the company gets so much hate, so I'm okay with your designations of internet warrior, I'll wear it like a badge. The company has contributed so much to the industry and the world, it deserves warriors at its side defending what it did right. |
It's people like you that make gamers look silly. Be a proud internet warrior if it makes you feel better. I never said they didn't make good games and I'm not hating on them. There's a reason people look at Nintendo the way they do and Nintendo did it to themselves. Be angry that wiiu will finish ps4, be angry wiiu has zero chance of winning this gen and just keep being angry over something so dumb as people not living Nintendo like you do. If you like a system then like it. It childish that you get so emotional over over people not liking Nintendo. Get over it "internet warrior" lol

You know what all these Sega, Atari, Famicon, Xband comments make me think. That right there is innovation in consoles, and it doesn't count for shit. MS put an HDD in the box and gave it networking, and now its become an industry standard. They perfected it, for lack of a better term, enough so that it became standard in the industry. Clearly, perfection > innovation, in that case and in general. |
I think it has more to do with the technology of the internet and what was possible at the time. The ideas presented in those early attempts at online gaming were way ahead of their time. When XBOX Live was introduced, the Internet was at the proper level of maturity to make sense. Broadband was becoming more and more popular as people were moving away from dial up. When XBAND was introduced in 1994, the Internet as we know it, wasn't in existence. Commercial Internet traffic wasn't introduced until 1995. So the XBAND modem didn't even connect to "The Internet".
