This post may be late but I just was scrolling through data from last year, and the DS greatly outsold Wii U in software. I know the DS has a huge userbase, and the fact the games can be played on 3DS just add to the number, but still the Wii U had some good titles last year and DS had been abandoned for well over a year (mostly) and it still managed to sell a lot more than Wii U.

Stuff like this happens...

Whats a Vita?

Software sales are a lot different from hardware sales. Hardware peaks early in a console's life, then diminishes over time. Software continues to grow long after hardware has peaked for healthy consoles, and continues to sell after hardware sales are dead. Wii software was above 3DS software in 2013 as well.
