they just put ps3 and ps4 shipped numbers together. and with their sold to customers pr numbers (btw: that's also shipped numbers with guestimates about how much percent of the stock is already sold +gfk and npd hard numbers. the last time it was quite easy for sony, becaus 99,x% of shipped ps4 were sold :D), we can explorate the ps4 shipped numbers. just like the previous 2 quarter

I'm kind of in the same boat with this comment.  we do have numbers for some markets, but everywhere else, it's a wild guess.  even VG methodology states, that Europe totals are estimated off UK+Germany+France markets only.  Then global is estimated off US+Europe+Japan.  Clearly VG can get good estimates using their methods, but even then, judging by weekly and even monthly adjustments, they could also be off.. and in the end they are still just estimates.  There's even a disclaimer on VG's methodology page that states to use the estimates at your own risk.. so.. it's really still all best estimates until official HW announcements from MS, Sony, and Nintendo.  Also, VG estimates are extrapolated using only those markets listed, which could mean, some countries that aren't tracked could be selling more/better than "expected", seeing that Sony has said demand has not yet been met in much of Europe.. I'm inclined to believe it, which could put the 9 mil as plausible at this point.  Remember, Sony released in 38 markets already.. who's to say apart from the 8.2 mil estimate using 5 countries, that it couldn't be 9+ mil in 38?

As certain markets slow down sony funnels stock to ones that are still hot.

Vg bases all their numbers from a certain few, those might happen to be the slowing down ones. Thus Vg numbers could be quite of. They are pretty bad when compared to ndp, why in the hell would they not be far worse coming up with world wide numbers.

So people believe that there's close to a million PS4s just floating out there uncounted in the past 2 months? Sure VGChartz has had some overtracking and undertracking but come on..an extra million in two months??

no.. didn't miss it.  but if the ps4 generally sold up to 1 mil plus every month leading up to that point (7 mil in 6 months) and then just heavily dropped off and sold only 1 mil in the past 2 months and some change, doesn't make you question whether VG numbers could be off?  it's all assumptions and estimates at this point... even VG numbers are wrong sometimes.  like BeElite states, if VG could be off npd, then they most certainly could be off on WW totals too.  VG numbers, as good as they do try to capture, aren't exactly the holy grail that ends all.  i look it at from a real world perspective like at with my workplace..  making production calls based on volumes expected via analysis and trends until anaomalies in demand increases/decreases orders, which throws projected numbers out the window... which for my workplace means, making workers do OT, bringing in extra shifts, new hires, etc or laying off workers, cutting hours, etc.. to meet those demands.  Analysis and estimates are just what they are until official numbers show otherwise.

6 months (between him and his biggest rival) and they both promote 10 year lifecycles.  That's not to say we won't get new consoles before then but two generations often live side by side for a number of years (like right now).

It took years for VGChartz to undertrack 360 by a couple million missing sales here and there. You're believing that same mistake can happen in 2 months for one million consoles. Thats ridiculous

Given their recent track record, id say anything is possible.

 A market anomaly happens and quickly they can considerably under or overtrack.

If PS4 randomly sold an extra million Sony would scream it from the rooftops. The internet doesn't just miss big stuff like that nowadays. We would have heard about it.
