Forums - Gaming - Dragon Age: Inquisition lead writer reveals the game’s first gay male companion

After years of under/mirepresentation of gay people,  I think it's acceptable and warranted that a game company merely MENTIONS a new exclusively gay character. Why would anyone be bothered by this mere acknowledgment?

These kinds of characters are not the norm in most video games, so I will be totally fine with developers advertising it until it becomes normal.

I wish the gay character was hot like Kratos or Drake. What dream boats they are especially Kratos.

Gross..... I seriously question your taste. Of all the characters you pick the homocidal lunatic covered in the ashes of his family and wears......mandals(*vomit*)

Bioware can never completely satisfy this croud. Some people reviled the way ANY character could be a love interest in DA2, because the odds of everyone being bisexual is fairly slim.

Now you have people complaining about having sexually exclusive characters.

Whats wrong with either? Honestly when I play my game, I pretend there isn't some parallel universe where I can be anything other than what I am. There is no character creator at the beginning and I don't choose a class. My Hawke IS Hawke. So by that same definition no other playthrough exists within my continuity. When I romance a male character that is the way it was destined to be, there isn't an alter version of them that would still hook up with me if Iwere female.

And people's dormant homophobic issues come to light when I hear people complain that everyone was hitting on them.......... OMG rly? How about DON'T click the heart options and you won't flirt with undesired characters. In no way did any character ever advance on me within the game unless I instigated it. There is ALWAYS an option to get Rivalry/Friendship/Love seperately, its based on how you want to play. People were using this excuse to basically broadcast their objection with the option being available at all.

I enjoy my Relationship building RPGs like Dragon Age, its one of the main reasons I enjoy Persona as well.

Is there such a need to advertise this?

I wish people would take notes at how sexuality worked in Dragon's Dogma.

there is a need

people complained about how it was done in the last game

LGBT community also would like to know that the options are even there(those who maybe haven't played the first 2) as it could be a selling point for them.

A game shouldn't be advertised/promoted on the basis it's got a gay character in it. This undermines the idea of equality. If you are making exceptional circumstance that the character is there, instead of just them being there, this is them saying "look, we aren't normal."

What complaints were there last time?

Isn't the game about magic and evil darkspawn? A selling point shouldn't be that you can bed anyone, it should be that it's a great game. Who buys an entire game on the fact you can have a gay relationship in it?

There were many outrageous complaints after the 2nd game.

Have you never heard of Sims? The whole reason relationship building is put into action/RPG games is to appeal to a broader audience and enrich the overall game. If people can buy into a game simply because it is prettier than the rest why can they not buy into it so they can roleplay their fantasies? It is a Role Playing Game at its core. Combat is less than half of what this type of game is.

Are you kidding me? this is not over representing by having ONE gay person, ONE bisexual person and ONE lesbian character. That is rediculous. The pount of their goal is to make every person who plays the game feel like it was designed for them. Is it to muh of a bother to you that you have one less choice for who to have a relationship because Sera is lesbian?

wtf i was hoping to they take away out all gay shit from the game after DA2 fiasco

Lol, people are acting like they released a trailer just to highlight the fact the character is gay. They released a still and a character bio in a forum.... People get really bent out of shape any time a game dev is willing to discuss race, gender or sexuality.

Interesting reads and both extremely petty. To quote the first reply in the Escapist thread: "This proves it. No matter what you do, you can never make everyone happy."

First one is a straight male gamer being homophobic. The other one is a gay gamer being overly-righteous, he says they are being stereotypical if a gay male gets annoyed at a straight guys rejection? I did not know this was a stereotype. I wonder how many straight men take it personal when they get rejected...more of a male trait. :P

Sure character interaction is a big part of this series not banging everything that moves.
