Giving the ability to turn it off is a better option than no voice chat at all.

Depending on how visible the the progress is (e.g., a map showing territorial claims), it might not be needed, at least not in-match.

What you could do is allow teammates to converse, either verbally or in writing, in the lobby between matches, in order to craft a general strategy.

even more important than strategy is being able to talk your friends and socialize.  it is the exact same idea as why nintendo values couch multi-player expect your friends don't have to travel to your house which is the way most adult gamers play these days.  my friends live with their wives not with my wife.  it is fundamental to most peoples enjoyment of multiplayer is to feel be isolated and alone.

voice chat is a fundamental expectation of every online multiplayer game.

Could be a function of my irl friends rarely sharing the same taste in video games, but i've never really understood that angle (not to say you didn't just make a very good point. You did.)

A multiplayer game where you can't talk to the friends you are playing with.

Great idea!

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

yeah, i get that.  not everyone is cross town or country from their friends but a lot are these days.  not everyone wants to be social while gameing (or at least not all the time) but i really think it needs to be viewed as a core functionality for console games.  frankly,.. it's one of those important features that seperates consoles from the lesser mobile games.

fun, related story,..  demon's/dark souls doesn't have voice chat.  i can almost forgive it because of the attmosphere of isolation it was going for but i still find it a really poor decision.  so when my best friend and i co-oped we just used our phones.  i switched networks (AT&T to Verizon) so the calls would be in-network (aka free) and we could play anytime not just after 9:00pm and weekends.

it was pretty epic to look at my phone bill and see upwards of 4,000 mintues used in a month.

Why the hell would they need to think about this?
this should be an automatic Yes!
