Forums - Gaming Discussion - Crytek In Deep Trouble – Adoption of CryEngine Not Good, Ryse Development Catastrophic (Update: Crytek denies claim)

Crysis on PC was pirated relentlessly. This is gonna sound harsh, but PC gamers kinda brought the console-ization of the series on themselves, Crytek had to turn to PS3/360 make their money back.
1 Crysis 2 X360 2011 Shooter Electronic Arts 0.66 0.48 0.02 0.12 1.27
2 Crysis 2 PS3 2011 Shooter Electronic Arts 0.41 0.53 0.06 0.19 1.19
3 Crysis 3 X360 2013 Shooter Electronic Arts 0.45 0.28 0.01 0.05 0.79
4 Crysis PC 2007 Shooter Electronic Arts 0.00 0.68 0.00 0.03 0.71
5 Crysis 2 PC 2011 Shooter Electronic Arts 0.15 0.43 0.00 0.13 0.70
6 Crysis 3 PS3 2013 Shooter Electronic Arts 0.22 0.36 0.03 0.08 0.69
7 Crysis 3 PC 2013 Shooter Electronic Arts 0.12 0.26 0.00 0.06 0.44

When you include digital the console versions probably havent done that much better than the PC version. While they have more sales overall was the damage to the game/brand worth it? If Crysis 4 was announced tomorrow not many people would care, and thats sad.

Id expect 700,000+ sales on a PC exclusive game to be fairly profitable, again thats just retail. Steam and Origin must make the totals at least 200-600k higher.

Look at how Star Citizens backers lost their minds when they noticed a PS4 devkit it one of RSI's videos. Games targetting consoles tend to be designed differently compared to games targetting PCs, they also tend to play differently. Best example I can think of right now is Dragon Age Origins vs Dragon Age II, the first being very PC centric (and loved by the community) and the second console centric.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

The fact that there are pretty much zero AAA budget PC exclusives still being made speaks volumes about the impact piracy has on their viability.

Star Citizen ? LOL

The fact that consoles gamers are using the silly piracy argument against PC platform shows how ignorant they are about PC gaming in general. Even if piracy was eliminated sales wouldn't drastically increase due to the fact that the most guilty users are financially constrained.

One game? And don't be surprised if it comes to PS4/Xbone in the future.

Most pirates aren't pirates out of necessity; if they can afford a rig that can run games at high spec, they can afford the games. They just have an entitled brat attitude and think they should get what they want for nothing.

Terrible gross generalization there...what makes you think most people who pirate a game, would have bought it anyway? Where is your proof all PC gamers are entitled brats? If a game is good it will sell on PC.

Making a mega-budget game for PC only is financial suicide, hell, devs go backrupt these days even with PC and consoles to draw on. You need every possible source of income to recoup those kind of ridiculously excessive expenditures.

The better solution would be to just spend a sensible amount of money on your game, instead of enough to buy a small country.

I never said that. I said pirates were entitled brats.

It won't come to consoles and so will ARMA 3 as well as Dayz.

Don't assume that every PC gamers have awesomely expensive rigs and don't also assume that they would pirate because at that point they might as well use steam instead of pirating. This is totally on the fault of the developers being obsessed with the money from console gamers and most of the pirates are really from low income users.

If you were poor, you wouldn't have a rig that could play AAA PC exclusives in the first place, so you're irrelevant to this discussion.

Must be. Did any of the Crysis games sell more than 1 million on PC? They did on PS3/X360.

As of 2010 Crysis 1 had sold 3 million copies, and Crysis Warhead sold 1.5 million, and the first Far Cry did 2.5 million. Crysis 2 and 3 are probably also over a million each on PC by now including digital sales.

You underestimate how developers will go out of their way to targeting minimum specs. Many people with a R7 240 will be able to get by. Sure it may be sub hd and what not but they'll still get through so if anything you would drop your worthless agument on piracy being the problem when it's very clear that these poorer countries will find a way.

And poverty is not a license to steal.

You don't need a "AAA rig" to play most games. As someone who has visited and lived in developing countries with huge piracy most don't even care about specs, most people play AAA PC games in medium or even low settings, and that includes games like Crysis.
