Forums - Gaming - Is an "indie crash" possible? Also, the return of mid-tier games?

Follow my line of thought here: the crash of 83 happened because there were way too many games, with no guarantee that those games would be godd (and most of the time, they weren't) and therefore consumers lost interest.

Okay, now, indies are EVERYWHERE these days, and most of them have one thing in common - they are these retro, 8/16-bit crap. Nothing against that style, but it got old. Quick. You can only appeal to people's nostalgia so much. Can we see a scenario where there are just so many indies popping on Kickstarter, giving no guarantee that they'll be good (which is completely paradoxal on this internet age), that consumers will say "fuck you" and we'll see indies collapsing? With the only survivors being the ones that truly standout (the Journeys and Transistors of this life)?

I mean, the gap between AAA games and indies is ENORMOUS, and it's only increasing. Mid-tier games (I'd call Journey a mid-tier game) just need to go back eventually, both from the standout indies and from big companies trying to cut costs - without necessarily killing the AAA games. It's like the bubble bursting and then going back to the normal size - and then it begins to increase again, ad infinitum.

So, is this scenario possible? Or am I being too optimistic?

No but a AAA crash is

I don't think most indie games are retro styled "crap" anymore, if they ever were. Increasingly, indies have become the new mid tier. Go hit up the Steam best sellers list, and I'll bet you anything that most of them more closely resemble games that would have been at home on the PS2 than on the NES or SNES. Genres like point and clicks, survival horror, and RTS that were deemed dead and unprofitable by AAA-obsessed publishers are now proliferating thanks to indies.

But I do think it's true that the lowered barriers to entry have caused a glut of content, and this will eventually have to sort itself out rather painfully as a lot of developers (even very talented ones) find themselves drummed out of the market.

Indie developers will probably just get more cutthroat. Probably will need to be worked on as a hobby instead of career to be profitable.

Funny thing about return of AA... It would probably be same quality as AAA as last gen.

Indies will come and go. They won't crash but there will be more losers than winners.

With all the shit indie games we have been getting on steam which are basically clones/mods of other indie games, I think so... The amount of terrible indie games that get flooded on steam in a daily bases is stupid. I think there will be a crash at some point, at least on steam that is

Many indie games are already more ambitious than mid tier games of the PS2 generation.

Read some reviews if you want to avoid crap, lol.

It did for me already, their are so many indie games I bought already on PS4 and so many are a waste of money and even one game that they had to make again because it is that bad..

Also I recommended someone to buy games on Steam and he is already tired of it because it has so many horrible games..

I'm not sure why you're "optimistic" about a crash in the market. But I doubt there will be a crash anytime soon, in 1983 not only was there an abundance of crappy games but also no way to really know what game is good or bad.

Sure there are a lot of crappy games out there today, but with things like the internet it's really easy to find out what games are good and what games are bad. So if someone continuously makes crappy games it's probably not going to turn out the best profit for them.

people don't by development teams they buy games.

not every developer will find success and some will find massive success. that is as true for indies as it is for AAA publishers. difference is it takes an activision to create a title like destiny and almost anyone could create the next minecraft. but from here on out there will always be more indie titles then AAA.

AAA is going to be a "once a month" thing and highly focused on the holiday release window since it takes 3+ years and $100M to develop. indies will be a 3+ a week thing and fill the gaps between major releases. i'm just going to tell it like it is,.. if you cannot enjoy indie games you will not be able to enjoy the video game industry moving forward. AAA is going to be very sparse and if you don't like that 1 title that comes out in a month you'll have to keep waiting a long time for the next.
