I use this one:

Can't really go wrong with Western Digital since they are pretty much the best company out there when it comes to Mechanical Hard Drives and it comes with a 2 Year Warranty! Also, I believe its on sale right now for $80, oh and its a 2TB hard drive! But by the love of god, Format dat shit when you get it cause the software it comes with is terrible! Oh and it uses external power

Thanks but I should've stated I need a portable one. The way my Wii U is in the room, it needs something small to just sit on top of it.

Ohh, then I recommend this one, I use it as my PC's external hard drive and it comes with a 3 year warranty! Its also really good!

If you are looking for a small HDD you will need this:

http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-dual-Micro-B-Cable-Black/dp/B005M0ICG2/ref=pd_sim_e_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=12YRS5S6FN43TA05HX2S

With that cable you can basically connect any HDD you want (as far as I know at least). I use this hard drive with the cable and I haven't gotten any problems at all.

I don't know much about this so can you explain how it works...

How does the Y cable give the HD power? Does it plug into an outlet or something and the other end in the HD / Wii U?

With the normal cable you only connect the HDD and the Wii U via 1 USB port. With the Y cable you use 2 USB ports, giving the hard drive basically double the power.

The power comes straight from the Wii U then...yes?

Question? Can't we just use anything? I have one, but never thought about using it. Also, what happens if it dumps all the memory. Can we get the games back?

I don't think you can just use anything but I could be wrong.

I think you can send the Wii U to a Nintendo and they can bring your games back. Again, I could be wrong.

The power being output by a single USB port on the Wii U doesn't supply enough to keep the HDD running, so you need to use 2 to give it sufficient power (the HDD doesn't have its own power supply).

Thanks Jizz face. I think I'll buy the one in your link plus a Y cable.

Well... If your hard drive doesn't have external power, you need a Usb Y cable or else your hard drive won't work properly... And if you say remove the hard drive or something happens to the hard drive, you can just redownload the games again how ever many times you want as long as you don't lose the console

Just a hint. Portables are tricky as most will require a Y cable (because they are USB 3.0 now). I got an imation 500gb one. Sometimes the Wii U doesnt detect it and sometimes it does. Just need to turn console on and off and it usually does. I have had my Wii U freeze on me before because of the external hdd.

Nintendo could have solved a lot of hdd issues with USB 3.0.

Awesome! Thanks for the help.

Do you have a Y cable? If so, it still doesn't work? Maybe I'll reconsider and just rearrange some things and get a regular hard drive...I have much thinking to do.
