With that cable you can basically connect any HDD you want (as far as I know at least). I use this hard drive with the cable and I haven't gotten any problems at all.

How does the Y cable give the HD power? Does it plug into an outlet or something and the other end in the HD / Wii U?

With the normal cable you only connect the HDD and the Wii U via 1 USB port. With the Y cable you use 2 USB ports, giving the hard drive basically double the power.
