CD Projekt Announces DRM-Free Steam Competitor GOG Galaxy

It will make online activation "completely optional."

CD Projekt has announced GOG Galaxy, a DRM-free online gaming platform that will allow players to access their games without needing to connect to the internet.

Conventional features such as automatic game updates and friends lists are present, but what sets GOG Galaxy apart from its competitors is that being online is "completely optional," according to the trailer. "It is up to the player to decide which features they want to use."

Interestingly, GOG Galaxy will also include a cross-play feature, allowing gamers to play with friends who have purchased games through other online services, such as Steam.

The new platform was announced at CD Projekt's livestreamed press conference, at which many new details about its forthcoming RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt became available. "More news" about GOG Galaxy will come later in the year.

The main thing that's pissed me off about the Steam client is the DRM that's prohibitive to offline play of my games and the offline mode is a joke when you look at what you have to do in order to use it. So long Steam, and fuck you for not realizing my internet sucks or that unexpected server crashes that prevent me from playing any of the 84 games in my library in offline mode if they haven't been fully updated.

Is anyone else making the switch? Has this been posted already and I'm just blind?

I am the Playstation Avenger.

I like GOG a lot, I'll check this out.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Sounds interesting.

CD Projekt Red is one of the best companies out there, and they have only produced two games!

So, how does it connect to my GOG account? And could they have chosen something other than "galaxy"? It's such a boring word, and I could care less about outer space.

What if there is a planet out there full of lesbian alien hotties?

but there is so much potential for pointless shoujo-ai, for example:

Andromeda: *eternal blush* "wait Milky Way-chan, I just want to hug you, you are so cute and small" *boing, boing*

Milky Way: "leave me alone, you cow!" Uguu~ T_T why is she so fast, I can't flee .. I don't want to become one with that thing

(background, Andromeda Nebula and the smaller Milky Way will collide in a "mere" 2bil years and fuse to one galaxy in about ~5bil years)

Switch? Well, it's not like the big publishers are going to abandon DRM. GOG is the better option, certainly, when it comes to games that are on both, but I don't see it challenging Steam in terms of content.

Still, yeah, that's pretty awesome. The only thing I like about the Steam client is that it has a list of my games in one place. That's it. I close it down unless I have to have it open.

Souds interesting. Except for the name. It's a shame I don't do much PC gaming. In terms of last gen (PS3) my current PC is only mid range. So, it can do Street Fighter IV on max settings, the one game I don't like so much, and others just a little above minimum.

I don't have any other games yet to try, but, I'm assuming they'll just look like the PS3 counterparts, and I'm not spending extra money on a perfectly ok laptop for a graphics increase. But, I will look for things in gog to try.

Surely they won't have control over individual game DRM though? Like Origin/Uplay.
