I believe its called "vore" and it hadn't even occured to me as motive... though suddenly Yoshi's eggs make more sense, including why normal enemies leave them empty.

That doesn't really answer my question, but okay. I don't really think Nintendo likes cannibalism, though. It's just the Japanese-ness of their games!
