:O

180 jokes aside, it is not good that MS keeps flip-flopping like this. I thought that they were past that point, but I guess I was wrong...

Yeah... your example proves absolutely nothing. Watch Dogs had a bigger opening than MK8 on PS4 even though its available on several other consoles and PC.

The impact if any of a PC port isn't significant. Its an argument Sony fans have made for the life of the 360. Yet the 360 was a strong competitor and sold more 1st party software.

I assume that's a joke or bad wording?

According to VGChartz it did.

If you own a high end PC, you're a PC gamer, regardless of whether if you own a console.  Most consoles gamers don't own a gaming PC.   As an analogy, I'm sure most console or PC gamers also have a smartphone/tablet/iPad and play casual games on those platforms, but I sure the console/PC people don't call themselves iPad/android/mobile casual gamers.  However, there are lots of people (1 billion people that downloaded Temple Run or the millions that download flappy bird) that are casual gamers, but don't own a console/PC.  Casual gamers and video gamers are not the same market.  PC gamers and console gamers are not the same market.  Similarly, there were many casual/family (Mom and Pops) gamers that bought a Wii, but won't buy a Wii U.  Not the same market.

Those are arbitrary defintions.

Whereas enthusiast PCs are high-end by definition, gaming PCs can be subdivided into low-end, mid-range, and high-end segments. Contrary to the popular misconception that PC gaming is inextricably tied to high-priced enthusiast computing, video card manufacturers earn the bulk of their revenue from their low-end and mid-range offerings.[1]

I never implied that PC gamers do not own consoles. However, your following claim that most console gamers dont have PCs is more or less false, because a gaming PC just has to be able to play games, to be a PC Gamer you simply have to own a PC that can play games. Furthermore, these are merely descriptive terms, they do not supercede each other or are exchangable, i.e being a PC gamer alone has no bearing on whether or not one has the ability to play on another device.

However, those with PCs that outspec the XB1 will not purchase the XB1 versions of the game because they will be more expensive and lower fidelity. That means less games for the console to that consumer, thus less reason to purchase the console at all.

The Markets are distinct but they overlap and are all within the sphere of the Gaming Industry. Thus they affect each other, people who double dip without incentive are in the minority thats why things like Crossbuy exist. It is naive to think that the platforms are so distinct that despite the fact that the media we are concerned with(games), are basically the same, the individual markets based on platform would be completely divorced from each other.

The Xbox Fans are trying to spin this as a positive thing

Its a great thing for people who game on Windows and has no real impact on Xbox.

Furthermore, I believe MS feels pressure to put games on Windows with SteamOS being a potential competitor.

I pretty much doubt Dead Rising 3 will go to Steam.

But since the OP also pointed out Quantum Break, I think QB will release on PC eventually. It's Remedy what we would be talking there.

Zing!

i am getting it on steam!

Yeah, I definitively suck at making prediction.

On the bright side, we can play together Basil!!

That's a naive way at looking at the industry. In reality, overlap is in the majority, and PC gamers who already have machines that outspec this generation, which is not a small niche at all, typically buy consoles solely because of exclusives. If something is on PC, let alone steam, then that is one less reason to buy to console. That is why it hurts sales, it might not be directly measurable, but we know it will have an effect.

The greater issue is that this doesn't become a regular thing, which is why the QB rumor is troubling.

As long as people are playing the games on Windows, MS seems content. MS said they're going push games on PC and they're using Steam to do it.

QB will likely be a PC game and that's great. It will have no measurable or significant impact on Xbox and Windows users will be happy for MS allowing it. I hope MS put the Halo trilogy and Gears trilogy on PC. The more fans those series have the better.

People telling MS that putting games on PC hurts Xbox, yet they keep doing it and allowing it.

I assume you simply looked at the total sales numbers for Microsoft Game Studios on the 360? I'd suggest you read the list of games, because an awful lot of those games aren't 1st party ^^;

MS tracked quite far behind Sony and Nintendo for 1st party sales last gen, even if you include the bundled Kinect game (which made up quite a sizable chunk of their 1st party sales).
