I think we disagree on what control is. In ff13 I can set paradigms however I want and it controls what my teammates do. They do what I want them to do, I just don't have to tell them what to do at every step of the game. If I want them to attack normally, I can. If I want them to do high damage stagger attacks, I can make them do that. They don't just do what they want.

And there is even more control in ff12, since gambits are extremely complex.

In both games I've controlled what my characters do at all times. Really don't know what you're tlaking about. Just because I don't have to put inputs in every second doesn't mean I'm not controlling them.

This is especially helpful, as I've always preferred the active time battle system, and always used that battle option in the previous games, because I try to do the inputs as fast as possible. Again, searching for specific spells and items, etc is extremely cumbersome in this type of battle because while I'm searching for the antidote, my enemies are attacking in real time.

Yeah we disagree on control. Paradigms aren't good enough for me, I want to control exactly what moves every character does and who they target. I see FF12 and 13s systems as just controlling a general range of what the ai do while I want full control. I had no problem with inputs using the atb system, I would always have it on wait mode and the slowest settings.

Again: FFXII allows you to select the actions of your entire party. You can beat the game without ever touching Gambits.

Well, I hope FF XII HD becomes a reality then. I'll gladly give it another try

Even if it doesn't, you should give it another try anyway.

While I agree that the story is, at best, forgettable - or maybe just really poorly told, I remember next to nothing of the plot. The only one of the series where that happened - I think the soundtrack, graphics and gameplay make up for the lack of an engaging plot. The characters are debatable too - I like Ashe, Fran, Basch and Balthier. The latter two are awesome, imo. But Vaan and Penelo? They feel completely out of place. The de facto protagonist is Ashe, honestly.

The story was good, it was only told poorly because Vaan and Penelo were shoved in late on the development cycle. Since Basch was too manly to be a main character for the JRPG audience, or something. As writing tips go, a bad story can be interesting if you look only at the right characters and the right time, and vice versa - in my opinion, that was the case here.

By knowing what about the Paradigms you can control who they attack. Different setups allow for more control over the AI and how you want them to act.

Seems like your issue is with the speed of the battle systems. XII and XIII are both designed to relatively fast moving. X-2 is even faster than both of those, but it still retains the paint design of what you want.
