The story was good, it was only told poorly because Vaan and Penelo were shoved in late on the development cycle. Since Basch was too manly to be a main character for the JRPG audience, or something. As writing tips go, a bad story can be interesting if you look only at the right characters and the right time, and vice versa - in my opinion, that was the case here.
