Forums - Nintendo - The Pros and Cons of A Nintendo Hybrid Portable Console

I've noticed a lot of people wish Nintendo will make a hybrid portable console next generation. However, I think there are some cons to this idea although there are definitely some pros as well. Let's imagine this being only one console like a tablet with a HDMI port and bluetooth connection for four controllers:

Pros:

1. More focused on one game device versus two

2. More games for one device versus less games on console and too many on portable (Wii U and 3DS and even Wii and DS)

3. Nintendo portable always sell way more than their consoles

4. Possible home console like Pokemon?

Cons:

1. Nintendo makes more profit on software than hardware

2. Hybrid console will need to sell more than a console and portable combo would for hardware profits

3. How does Nintendo distinguish handheld orientated software versus home console orientated software? Price? Will they cannibalize each other?

4. How weak is the hybrid portable console if its compromising on its portability?

What do you think are the pros and cons of a Nintendo Hybrid Console?

Well I guess a pro is it's a fairly innovative idea, it could catch on like the Wii but at the same time, putting all of their eggs into one basket might be a recipe for disaster.

Do you see the handheld and console being sold together or seperately in this situation?  If its together the console is gonna be way too expensive, if its seperate people are just gonna buy the handheld and forget the console.

I don't see that happening, this does nothing to change gameplay experiences, unless they add some kind of gimmick ofc.

Honestly, I don't know. Will think about it and update OP late. But you listed some notable cons for both situations. Can you think of any Pros for both?

You got the main pro I can think of, Nintendo can focus on releasing games on one platform instead of spreading their games out on two seperate platforms.

Chances are you're right, which is why as a whole I always thought this "Fusion" thing might not be worth the risk.

Part of me feels like this boils down to one question: would you pay $300 for a psvita with google chrome?

Turbo Express Portable says hi.  Although the TG16 was even less popular  than Nintendo's least popular console, so for Nintendo it'd actually work.

Yea... I kinda hope this doesn't happen.
