Rogue Galaxy was so damn good. It reminded me a lot of FFXII but with much better characters and story.

Too bad the ending didn't really leave much room for a sequel.

And considering the other projects Level5 is working on, my dream of seeing RG again will probably never happen.

Sadly, I never played Rogue Galaxy or Wild Arms, but I would gladly play a good Legend of Dragoon sequel!

Personally, all of Sony's owned JRPG IPs have been a mixed bag of Awesome Gameplay but weak storytelling. I had a lot of fun playing most of them but none had great stories like a FF game. The highest quality games they ever produced was Level 5's Dark Cloud 1/2 in my opinion. It was varied and different enough to stand out and the story was meant to be light hearted but dark undertone which made it flow better. Thats probably why it was one of the few JRPGs to sell over a million.

If Sony is stepping back into the JRPG arena(as they should because JRPG fanbase heavily overlaps PS Fanbase) they need to completely overhaul one of their old IPs or start from scratch. They need to make RPGs that are gonna rival Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, Persona, and/or Final Fantasy. The closest IPs they own that could pull that off is Arc the Lad and Legend of Dragoon. The issue is how do you make Power Ranger-like Transformations into Dragon Armor cool again for the 2014? Personally, I love that kind of stuff, turning into giant Knight Mechs in White Knight Chronicles had me super giddie with glee, but I don't think that appeals to mass market.

Also, something that is wearing really thin in JRPGs is traditional Anime style. I think subconsciously something many do not like is the anthropomorphic bodies of anime characters. Do anatomically correct body structure or go home. No more big heads, long bodies,big eyes, super slim features. Western territories for the most part are very resistant to the cutesy look. FF has matured over the years where they technically create anime characters but they exist more freely in today's market because they also can be said to look realistic. Sure, their hairstyles are usually outrageous but thats cool, as long as their body isn't weird.

Disclaimer: I have no issue with it, I'm just saying most in the West do. Lightning is still a total Anime inspired character design but at least she is visually adaptable to progressing technology.

Tales seems to be growing again in popularity in the West, and that's massively influenced by anime.  

(Pretty great example of anatomically ridiculous body structure).

Similarly, in Bravely Default they went for... super deformed, chibi-esque artstyle:

And that was a smash hit success.  Fire Emblem too.

I think to appeal to the masses in the west, you probably do have to go for a more realistic style like Square Enix do, yes.  And Japan Studio have the resources to make such a title too.  But I don't think anime-style is "wearing thin".  You probably do limit your audience by making a game in that artstyle but having a limit audience doesn't mean you can't make your game a success as long as your expectations are in check.

The gamble they'd have to take on a super-realistic, hyper-graphically-expensive title to rival Final Fantasy (while also having little to no brand recognition behind the title) would be a big risk compared to going for something anime-esque which would a) be cheaper b) probably appeal in Japan more and c) still appeal in the west.

That's just how I see it at least, anyway.

Milla is a huge step up realistically from previous entries....

 

Bravely Default's world design is actually a gradual evolvation of this....

and it does it all very well. Its seriously the more realistic looking of the characters seems to garner more popularity over all. I love some chibi style like in BD, I hate sprite games tho. I just see BD's artstyle as a more realistic sprite concept.

The more they transition to more realistic styles(while still maintaining the charm of previous entries) the more they seem to sell. Is this the only factor contributing to their increase of success? no but I do think it counts as a deciding factor for many.

I choose Legend of Legaia. The gameplay mechanics were great.Legend of dragoon would be a interesting remake for the PS4 as well.

Even at this cost it made a lot of money to Sony, but yes, just when it came to USA.
I don't think Sony should expect the same level of success than FF, they were a newcomer company at the market and bringing a new game, it hardly would manage to achive what FF did at it best form with a first try and that near to the FF success.
But LoD took too much time in the making, maybe they thought they really could manage it. Well, LoD seems way better than FF7, graphically, and I can't judge the story or gameplay being better as I haven't played FF7, but seems like Sony did they part right, but was expecting something almost impossible.

A friend spoiled it to me lol, but eventually I will play it.

I have played FF1, 2, 3, 7 dirge of cerberus, 12, 13 and 13-2
Skipped the SNES and PS1 era, the era people call the gold era of FF and general RPG, lol.
I will play 7, 8 and 10/10-2 sometime, maybe when I get university vacation this year (in a couple weeks), I will have to take the dust off my PS1 and PS2 and play them xD

The Ps1 era is why I am a rpg freak that I am today. Pure gold! PS2 rpgs didn't even come close imo and PS3 is kind of a joke compared to both.



I've heard good things about rogue galaxy but i never got to play it. It gets my vote.
