Really depends on the game and type of input. If it's analog input then 16ms of extra lag is a lot less issue, so for realistic driving games I don't mind 30fps so much, because realistic acceleration, deceleration and steering are not instantaneous, and you don't move the camera around.
For arcadey games, fighters and platformers, shooters then it's more needed that's why they tend to shoot for 60fps.
I don't really see the point in dictating only one direction - if a game wants to push speed, let it. If a game wants to push visual fidelity, let it.

The assumption that great visuals come at the expense of compelling gameplay is utterly retarded as well. There are many great looking games with stellar gameplay, and plenty of utterly ugly games with poor gameplay. If developers won't come up with compelling gameplay with great visuals, what makes people think they would make a compelling game with poorer visuals?

Kinda the exception though, no? You do make a good point though. |
I think its an exception as well, but it only goes as far as marketing. We don't live in a perfect world that enables developers to make games without being compromised by their marketing department. But the gaming industry is still young compared to other markets.
That article is a good read and I agree with what he says for the most part. Its a shame all games cannot hit 60 fps and 1080p.
It is not possible to hit that mark then its not the end of the world. Some genres its more important to have a solid and smooth framerate and those games should be 60fps constantly. While with others its more important to max out the visuals so go for 1080p.
