Seriously, just get a PS4 or XO. PC gaming requires more effort than console gaming. Because I buy when it's on special, PS+ has never cost me more than $3.33 a month and I've gotten way more value out of it than that with the included games and discounts. I'm sure the same will be true of the new Xbox Gold when all the details emerge.

A Steam Machine is just a custom built computer. It's not a console.
Get a PC. You don't have to understand every in and out of a PC to do that, ask a friend if you have one who understands a little bit! That's what I'd do at least.

No, they are not - they are PCs with SteamOS on which you can't (and you won't be able to, since they'll flop miserably) play most of 3rd party games. So, if you want to play most 3rd party games you only have 3 choices and none of them is Steam machines.

Stam Machine won't even get those games. Almost none of the AAAs port their games for Linux, it's mostly Indies and Valve that do that. If you want to play those AAA games either get a PC, get a new Mac or get one of the other consoles.
If your looking for both more freedom and more security for less worries such as platform support or resistance to complications then in the end you will get nothing ...
I don't see much of an issue with pre-built PC's as you claim since their almost as easy to operate on as consoles. You may need to update once in a while but so does your WII U too. If your irrational disdain towards windows gets the best of you then there's really nothing else to consider other than the new HD twins.

And this is not an issue of me needing anything. It's not a question of "where should a play 3rd party games." It's "should I get a steambox." If the answer is no, I'll be fine with not playing those games, as I only play video games casually and don't really care.

Anyway, sure, with Steam Box you will be able to play some 3rd party games and it has free online, so by all means, do buy it.
