3D Pokemon can't even save the 3DS, the 3DS declined in YoY sales despite having Pokemon. 

In this analogy what Iwata means is what the original Pokemon did for the Game Boy back in 1996/98 ... which was something new and different that completely changed the Game Boy's trajectory. 

Brain Training (2006) for DS, Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) for the Genesis, etc. are other similar examples. 

Unfortunately Nintendo actually needs to invest in new ideas to have any chance of getting a game like that (and even then chances are slim as these types of break out hits happen maybe once or twice a decade). 

This logic of his perfectly explains Nintendo's "conservative" projections for the Wii U. That title was Mario 3D world.

Thats basically relying on luck instead of developing a steady stream of games with appropriate budgeting.

I think he is only referring to changing it from being a minor profitable system that doesn't exceed GC sales to that of a solid profitable system that closes in on N64 lifetime.

From that prospect, yes a single title could jump start that type of success.

Not even Nintendo thinks they can make Wii U bring in Wii numbers at this point. That would take multiple amazing games to turn that tide.
