Forums - Gaming - I need 360 gamers to explain something to me

I have been reading article after article about the RROD and other 360 issues: There were the 2 at GDC, there is the Irish Gaming site that no longer supports 360 and there is this:

" I’m on my 9th Xbox 360. After 5 dead Premium systems since launch, I decided to spring for an Elite, with the hopes of better hardware. I was sadly mistaken, as I’ve gone through 3 Elites so far, with my 4th and current being a Falcon. I’ve had this one for two months now and haven’t had any issues. The reason I keep coming back, aside from the games (which I’ll touch on in a second), is the fact that I purchased the Best Buy warranty with both systems and have been able to swap it in store with no issue"

Here is my question (I am a ps3 owner:

Why do people keep coming back to this console with so many problems? This guy is on his 9th!!! And yet people are avid fans of the 360. You will probably see this as flaming but I am legitimately curious. If my PS3 died that much I would still play it, but I would be pissed at sony and would not be a supporter at all.

Go ahead and light me up, but hopefully my curiousity will be satiated...

To this day it simply has the best games library of any current-generation video game system.  There is no denying that, there is no changing that, it just is.

I had one RROD but I am a vet of the DRE on the PS2. Stuff breaks. If it happens, I'll just buy another one. I enjoy the games too much to let an error stop me.

Yeah really, i went through 3 PS2s.  That's one of the reasons i need to snag me a 20 gig PS3.  I imagine 10 years from now it'll be a pain to track down a PS2...

and my NES, Atari and Balley Astrocade and SNES will still be working.

My PS1 will however likely be broken as i gave it away when i got my PS2... to someone who destroyed my first copy of Final Fantasy tactics.

We don't complain much because MS stepped to the plate and replaces them for free.

I seriously wonder what these people are doing to kill 10 Xboxs... I play mine all the time and it broke after almost exactly one year. Of course, I kept it well-ventilated with a fan underneath it, too. I have a hard time believing that these people with 5+ broken boxes are treating them well at all.

It's obvious there is a problem with early units but after 2 or 3 broken units, people should reevaluate exactly WTF they are doing that is causing so many problems.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

I've had 1 360 RRoD on me (since launch). I had 3 PS2's DRE on me last gen. At least if my 360 dies I can get a new one free. Hell, I even had to replace my first NES when I was a kid. Every company has made a console with reliability issues, its not the end of the world.

Because it would be very rare for the average 360 owner to be on his 9th 360. I've had mine for over 18 months without any failures. There are people who spill their McDonald's coffee on their laps and end up with terrible scars and win multi-million dollar lawsuits, but that doesn't make those people the majority.

One of the factors that have made the situation tolerable for the many who have experienced the dreaded RROD is the 3 year warranty. If the Blu-ray drive motor goes wonky--as has happened to quite a few people--when you're PS3 is 13 months old, you're screwed. Will you abandon your PS3 if that happens? I would hope not... it's a good console.

The three years warranty applies only to RROD but the 360 seems to be suffering from dozens of problems which require expensive repair assistance (around 100$) after one year warranty :

- E74/One red light (second most common failure)

- E79

- black screen but sound, or picture but no sound,

- disk drive dies, scratches games or even break them

- disk tray which opens by himself in the middle of a game (or which doesn't want to open at all)

- Message "to play this disc, put it in an xbox360 console"when you put a 360 game in the 360 (isn't it ironic ?)

etc.

Just go there and see by yourself : http://forums.xbox.com/281/ShowForum.aspx

I understand why people keep playing it, but why do they defend it so avidly, as if there life was at stake depending on how well it does.

I kinda understand PS3 fanboyism, i own one...and its got some cool features

I understand wii fanboyism, its dominating and its changing gaming

But the 360 i dont get at all

There is no understanding of some fanboyism and not others. Fanboyism is the tech word for jealousy and that's a universal concept. You either understand jealousy in full or not at all. 360 fanboys, PS3 fanboys, Wii fanboys, it's just putting down the other guy to justify your purchase. Fanboyism is not something to aspire to.

If you want to understand it still, it's about the games and the online. Both are spectacular. 360 owners usually don't have to ever run out of games to play. It's a constant stream of first, second and third party offerings.

It's a really great experience that gets crushed if the RROD hits. The other reason most people come back also is that they're in the middle of a game when it hits and probably have another 1 or 2 they haven't started yet. I know i've replaced a PS2 for faulty hardware, and didn't even get a free one to replace it with. You just punch a wall, scream into a pillow and suck it up.

Because the problems are greatly exaggerated. Don't get me wrong, RRoD death do happen but they aren't this 1 in 3 consoles thing you hear all the time. And when they do happen, MS does replace them with little to no hassle.

About the only way they won't replace your console is if it's something you did to hit (whether you took a hammer to it or modded it) or you bought a refurbished one. Other than that, despite what people will try to tell you they do take the console and it generally takes about a week.

-edit-

And just as a little perspective, I bought my 360 abotu a year after launch.  I got it and it was pretty much dead out of the box.  The DVD drive just didn't want to open and I was lucky enough to get the one game I was able to put in there out of it.  I called up MS customer service, they told me since it was about an hour old, just return it to Gamestop and I was playing my new 360 within 30 minutes.

Since then, I've kept my 360 in a poorly ventilated place where it should probably catch fire but it runs surprisingly cool.  Its little cubby generally generally stays cooler than my cable boxes and my Wii's cubbies.

Simple answer:the GAMES.It's always about the games.
That said i knocking on wood(is that proper English? XD)that my 360 will never die on me.

Man, I owned 2 myself - and Sony had to repair one after a royal runaround.

Yeah, my old game consoles still work great. I had a Gameboy my mum bought me, but it never worked.

I haven't played a game on my PS3 yet - and I know I'll christen it with a PS2 one. I have some PS1 disks around I need to test out this weekend.
