First of all, I know nothing about the game, so I wanna ask...is buying this...

enough to play the game? I buy this and I'm done?

Is there anything more I have to buy, cause I see these books...and I don't know what they are.

Lastly, is there anything extra I can buy that will make the game better?

I've played the board game with friends a long time ago. Its kind of cool.

That is enough to play something similar to Dungeons and Dragons, but not the real game. Everything is preconstructed and laid out for you, so it could be a good and easier introduction than buying the books and starting from scratch.

If your looking to play Dungeons and Dragons on the cheap, i'd suggest 3.5 instead of 4.0

A lot of Dungeons and Dragons stuff is allowed via the SRD... which will more or less allow you to try it out for free.  Though 4.0 is more new friendy.

Your best bet is probably to find a gaming group in your area and ask if they're running any games that will accept a newbie.

Comic book shops/wargaming shops are probably a good place to ask. If you're a student, then there may be a roleplay/wargame society at your uni.

Otherwise your best option is probably to buy the main rule book, a box of dice, and get a bunch of friends together to just go for it.

The figurines and dice you can reuse, also the tiles.

To play with the books you will need the player's handbook and some campaign setting, those will help you to create your characters and some adventures and the world around them. Also helpful are the dungeon master guide and the monster manual. As some one suggested find a group near you and start playing or download some of the basic books, the older versions are usually free.

There are also a tremendous amount of other pnp rpgs out there, including free ones. DnD is a good place to start but almost everyone that ive met has left it behind after playing other systems. DnD 3.X has a tremendous amount of extra material you can use after you have become accustomed to the system. Welcome to the wonderful world of pnp gaming.
