Yupp... the Souls series came to my mind when I came to this thread
They are good games, but nowhere near as good as their ratings suggest. The terms "cheap death" was because of technical limitations of the old days, when a game could have been finished in under an hour, and thats why it needed to be hard. Now its just that: cheap and predictable death. The story is actually decent (yet generic), the gameplay is good, yet it sometime feels like a 3D game from the midd 90's, when controlls where still "work in progress" but the soundtrack... well its great, but thats the only aspect that trully deserves to be praised IMO.
Solid games, but nowhere near as good as many suggest... I at least felt underwhelemed a bit :(
