Forums - Gaming - Underrated/Overlooked games that became overrated

definitely demon souls, was a complete sleeper hit, now everyone seems to use it for the "hardcore gamer" title

Yupp... the Souls series came to my mind when I came to this thread They are good games, but nowhere near as good as their ratings suggest. The terms "cheap death" was because of technical limitations of the old days, when a game could have been finished in under an hour, and thats why it needed to be hard. Now its just that: cheap and predictable death. The story is actually decent (yet generic), the gameplay is good, yet it sometime feels like a 3D game from the midd 90's, when controlls where still "work in progress" but the soundtrack... well its great, but thats the only aspect that trully deserves to be praised IMO.

Solid games, but nowhere near as good as many suggest... I at least felt underwhelemed a bit :(

Ah, one of those threads where people call "overrated" games that other people loved but they personally did not.

I'll participate, too. I name whichever game you really like. That game, it's overrated.

...That's stupid. It completely misses the meaning behind something being over rated. Your first line is in complete oposition of your second. Your second line is making it seem like the only reason people call a game over rated is because of the people playing and not the product. Your first line, correctly, states that "people call 'overrated' games that other people loved but they personally did not." That's the definition of over rated. The Last of Us is over rated because my personal opinion of that game is in negative contrast with the overall consensus of the game's quality and impact, not because I think it's "mainstream" of I'm "hipster" or I don't like/respect the kind of people who do enjoy this type of game.

Your retort is petty and misses the point of calling something over rated.

That's stupid.

My retort is basically that I'm calling the action of naming something 'overrated' as being a petty thing.  I'm calling the need to elevate your own opinions, while downgrading someone else's opinions, immature.  You get it now?  The whole action is silly.

My cousin, when he was a kid, had the habit of calling anything he didn't like 'dumb'.  I'd beat him at a game and he'd call it 'dumb'.  Any TV show he didn't like was 'dumb'.  The need to label things as 'overrated' is pretty much the same, just with adult wording.

I'm also going to label the Ys series in this thread. Good series that was overlooked for the longest time by a lot of people, but the way people talk about the series as a whole is like if every game is as good as Oath in Felghana and Ys7 and if those games were 10/10.  I'd rate each game in the series 5/10-9/10 and between.  There's a gap in quality between game to game.

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

They're ok games, largely ignored wen they released, now praised like they're amazing. They aren't.

SotC was never ignored, it was always praised, the moment SotC came out it became insta classic. Shadow of the Colossus also made ICO more popular when it came out, ICO was rereleased when SOtC launched. You just hear more praise now because it's one of the few PS2 games that got a HD remake on PS3 and more people from a newer generation got to try it.

I'm not sure where you got the idea I didnt like the game I mentioned. It's not my favorite Final Fantasy but definitely in my top 5. I'm sorry if you are taking the word "overrated" in a negative sense, as most people do. I'm not using it in a negative way, but couldn't think of a word that accurately describes what I was intending.

To be honest, I'm more talking about the posts of people who feel the need to run things that they did not like into the ground.  You didn't do that but there are usually a lot of those posts in threads like this.

The whole action isn't silly. It's criticism. It's silly when your a child and you call anything that doesn't go your way "dumb." It's not petty when you have reason and evidence not only as to to why your opinion of the game is not as high as others, but also why you feel that others are misguided in their rose tinted effection.

"I think the Last of Us is overrated because blah blah blah, and I think that people look past these faults because blah blah blah."

Critisism.

Yeah, thats the risk you take when you make threads like these, you just have to hope people are mature about it, which isnt always the case

They set the standard. If they hadnt been around evolving their gameplay style the Castlevania remake wouldnt have been as sweet and varied in action style with boss battles. Very epic first game.

Shadow of the Colossus and ICO were both critically acclaimed game but the sales response for such high calibur games was left wanting. This gen I think more people got to realize how great such games were.
