This is stupid. But I understand it. Honestly a better option would be offer a $10 ps+ discount for full game and maybe something like $40 to upgrade your ps+ free game that expires when ps+ does

Hmm. I understand this could be a bit annoying for some, but I'd probably go for the PS Plus upgrade because it's cheaper than retail. I already have PS Plus paid for another 3 years, and I doubt I'd be returning to a game that far down the line, even if I let the sub run out.

Honestly, with the requirement to have a sub to play online, I wouldn't let it run out at any stage though. I suppose if you wanted to resell the game...but that's not an option with digital games anyway.

So, i'm actually in favour of this practice, if it offers more full titles at a cheaper price. If there's no discount though, I'd want the hard copy.

well, you still own the dlc but you don't own the game.  imagine for a second ps+ gave you CoD for free and then you bought a map pack dlc.  you couldn't just play your map pack dlc after the ps+ subscription is canceled.  if you repurchased that CoD game you'd still have the dlc but you do have to rebuy the game before you can replay the dlc.
