Nintendo is currently unable to make Mario, Zelda or Pokemon relevant to the gaming market. Why should they be able to do better with Sonic?

Those franchises are relevant, they're just not able to carry sinking hardware platforms. No franchise could IMO. 

Sonic could only dream about having sales comparable to recent Mario games.

You may want to look up the sales figures and ratings of recent entries into those series.

Nintendo could easily create a critically acclaimed and successful 3D Sonic game.

I truly don't believe that Sonic will be big again, selling on average 1M per release that is multi-plat

There would have to have direct influence from Nintendo. More than there was in Sonic lost world.

I'm not sure i like the direction they are taking him in though. I would like to see either mute Sonic from the genesis era, or Sonic from the adventure series back. I know the stories were silly, but i really enjoyed them.

Not sure but there was a bunch of whiney fans saying it was unfair for it to be only on the Wii U even though Nintendo stepped up and saved the IP. 

 

Anyways Sonic did not make the jump to 3D gaming very good while Mario appeared to make it look natural for himself. Maybe Nintendo could redo the Sonic series and make him relevant again but it would take alot of influence from Nintendo and support from Sega.
