Guess again

So... a tabletless Wii U and a 3D-less 3DS will cause sales to explode?  I am guessing that is the "crap" you are talking about?

Nintendo released the 2DS, which I'm guessing was created to address the problems of the 3DS (expensive and 3D function) and sales went from 2.2 million in Q4 to 90k in Q1. If the quality of Nintendo games remained somewhat high (which they have, like the DS), system is still receiving movie tie-ins and shovelware (which it still is, like the DS), have multiple games geared towards women, a segment that Iwata championed during the DS era (which is also true, like Disney's Magical World) and is cheaper (retails for $99-129 vs 169/199) then why the extreme drop-off? Seems like a very accessible device to me.

With many games not using the tablet functions at all, im sure removing the "crap" from the Wii U wil cause a spike in sales as well, right?

In the mass market's eye it's the same step as polishing a turd. (Qualifying that i myself am quite satisfied with my Wii U and 3DS right now, but the sales do, unfortunately, tell a different story).

Now, dropping the gamepad and the 3D is important in the sense that Nintendo can get the price down and profit margins up, but it's not going to change the root appeal of the devices.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Not really much to be happy about here. I mean, the company itself will be fine for the forseeable future, but they don't seem to have much confidence in the Wii U given their predictions, and they don't expect any major surge in 3DS sales. They could be lowballing it to avoid the embarrassing situation they had when they slashed forecasts, but they'd have to be undershooting sales by more than 50% to have anything resembling success.

If their predictions are correct, they can't support the Wii U for much longer. A three to four year lifecycle at most. Lets hope Mario Kart 8 surprises everyone... including Nintendo.

If you piss off your fans, they won`t buy and hype your next product, and who then do you have to turn to Casuals? They`ve left for the most part. Sony or MS fans? They won`t trust NIntendo. As Burek stated, R&D could be largely attributed to QoL, which would make sense given its reveal in the investor meeting earlier this year.

That 100M was achieved with a very different strategy which might not work again (at least in the console industry). Part of the mistake with the Wii U is thinking that the Wii made NIntendo fans when in reality it only made Wii fans. The remaaining 85M is either gone or on PS or Xbox, and as I mentioned, they will be tough to sell to.

I`m not opposed to risk taking at all, but rash moves could leave the company in a worse situation, with their role in the gaming industry and all of their franchises in jeopardy. I don`t want to see a situation where a new Zelda game on iOS is true possiblity, or one where their franchises are auctioned off to the highest bidder (likely EA or Activision).

And what fans do they have now? 6M? Those 6M that are not enough to post profits? That are not buying enough software? The few ones left to forecast only 3.6M for a full fiscal year?

If you hype enough they are going to buy or at least the majority but instead you have a lot to gain.

What if, they get a new  "next gen" console, they promote it skyhigh, yet advertising and marketing costs exceed potential profits from the console and games. Then what?

I never mentioned a next gen console, but I will answer you: there's zero marketing with the Wii U, so a decent marketing won't make them go bankrupt. Making good games people are excited will make them sell enough to profit it. To make a game people is excited they don't need to spend the same investment than GTA.

They are not going to make GTA or market COD.

They are already going in the cheap route and still not posting profits. What do they have to lost if wants to do the opposite?

This'll be interesting, Iwata had better have good plans for this coming financial year, or else. Dropping Wii U is not a good idea now, but I can see with 3.6 million units shipped for the rest of the financial year, they've realized that this console is NOT gonna take off as planned. Perhaps their next console will come sooner than later, but it could potentially be related enough to Wii U's architecture so that when they launch, they can release games, and sell them for both consoles. I've been wondering about Iwata's comment regarding how their next console will "absorb" Wii U's architecture, maybe to a point where it can allow for ports from Wii U to their next console, or vice versa, so that if they launch a console quickly, they'll be able to cross-gen release some of them, or maybe have differences as well. The architectural differences between GC / Wii and Wii U are pretty large, I'm not surprised that they want to find something similar to Wii U for their next console, so that the "learning" process won't be as bad this time.

You should probably google search Wii U. Looks like the media continues to bash them and their plan (that you think they have) didn't work very well.

Ps3 never had such low sales and it's problem wasn't that it was completely ignored and unwanted like the Wii U's.

I can absolutely tell you the Cubs are out of any playoff contention and the season isn't even 20% in yet. LOL. Wii U's life is most likely about 50% over now.
