Forums - Gaming Discussion - Have Sucker Punch Invented A New Art Form?

ON TOPIC: I'm sorry for going a little off topic so far. In terms of artistic photography, I have to say that the inFamous pics I've seen look a class apart. The Wind Waker pics above are cartoony and hence don't express the same nuanced artistry as the inFamous pics in the OP. The Halo pics looked unbelievable (literally), but if what Ethomaz said is true (i.e. it isn't readily accessible to the end user), then inFamous is defintely a major next step in the direction the OP has hinted.

I won't go to far to say Sucker Punch invented or created this artistic photography in the game market because others game already had it in one way or other.

What Sucker Punch did was popularize this feature... together with the easy way to share pics in the PS4 (just needs to hit a button) they are creating a new tendency in the games.

I expect more games to have some kind of Photo Mode... it will be standard in any game in the future.

Think like the same thing when the Cellphones started to have cameras with easy upload do internt... everybody started to take pictures from anywhere... after that apps like Instragam got popular... gaming photos is following the same.

The cartoony aspect of WW doesn't take away from the artistic expression of the person taking the pic imho.

But if it does for you, this post settles it:

That said, Second Son is a gorgeous game. Credit where credit is due.

Those are pictures built from scratch and are not the result of a phographer walking around a virtual world and applying real world experience to the virtual world. Perhaps 'digital photography' is the wrong way to epress what I mean though ... Just like you would in the real world, Infamous players are looking for photo opportunities and some are achieving amazing things. AGAIN though, I'm not talking about graphics, I'm talking about personal intent and emotional connection with what you are trying to achieve.

Damn it, I can't find a way of expressing what I mean. This is the first time EVER we've seen this. Now if you could perhaps try to understand why I say 'EVER' you'd get what I mean. This is TRUE photography (PHOTOGRAPHY) in a virtual world. It's NOT just screenshots or screenshots with filters and different angles.

The PS5 Exists.

Now that's a post I can agree with! Indeed, I am already looking forward to printing out beautiful screen grabs for my study. I can just imagine the moments in MGS5 that I'll be capturing. This ease-of-use of this feature sets it apart big time.

Your camera-phone analogy is a very good one :)

They are free to put effects on the images or not. Same with real photography my friend.

No, you're just not getting it. It's not your fault, it's my fault for failing to express what I mean more clearly. There is a freedom to express yourself. This isn't the same as an artist creating an image to  look like a photograph, this is individuals with their own view of the virtual world being enabled to capture that view perfectly.

Ok, I'll put in a really pretentious way:

When I look at those photos I don't think 'wow, that rock looks so detailed' I think 'wow, this guy has really captured what a rock is.'

This picture says absolutely nothing about the game but it does say everything about the photographer:

The PS5 Exists.

Edit: My mistake, they are good examples of what I mean.

Like someone else said, Wind Waker already did it. I get what you mean, but one can do the same thing in Wind Waker, and especially Wind Waker HD. The same person who took those Infamous photos would have the same freedom of expression and movement in WW HD, which came out earlier. The only thing that can't be done ingame is the editing, which shouldn't matter because anyone serious about their "game photography" could use a real editing program with more options than any video game could have.

^^^^(This one actually might be a screen shot)^^^^

All exept one of those are taken with the in game "pictobox" camera. (Also, the images are super compressed for some reason, but they're usually in 1080p)

dat shoe!, I think nobody realizes but Sucker Punch just owned everyone and I mean everyone right now in terms of graphics.

Lol. Had the same reaction. Also the jeans too were blindingly realistic. Very nice.
