Forums - Gaming - Comparing WiiU's sales to Gamecube

On the wiiu's defense... Smash Bros have already been released on the gamecube which gave it a huge sales boost but we are still waiting for mk or ssb on the wiiu

So we will see

Daaaammmmm... Wii sold 10x more than Wii U in the same time. Did Wii really sell that much ONLY in USA!?

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

I like how people say "bah bah but nintendo made a profit off Gamecube sales" well based on this "positive" news Nintendo said "oh we can't compete" and made the wii. So although they made a profit was it a sustainable one? I can profit from sales of 2 systems with 50$ profit but is that enough or sustainable?

Sales do matter and if nintendo consoles continue to fail what gives them the incentive to stay in the console business when it's only losing profits the gameboy rake in?

sales do matter, just look at the amount of Mario's and Zelda's vs fzero and starfox

I've said this so many times but I believe as long as Nintendo doesn't replace the Wii U (and the QOL thing isn't a console) it'll outsell GC in the end. Sales will pick up later on when the library becomes bigger & better and when the price gets cheaper.

Wii U will have much more longevity sales-wise compared to GC.

The Wii U situation is beyond abysmal. Even a comparison against the DC will be terrible for it.

Not only did Nintendo manage to sell so few systems, but the amount of games that came out during the same time frame, from 1st party teams is so dismal in comparison, that really makes one think if Nintendo has already decided to stop development of Wii U games and simply finish off those in production (some of which we may not have heard of yet), because looking at this years first half, only having 2 games for their NEWEST SYSTEM on its SECOND YEAR, which is DYING because it has NO SUPPORT, is like watching the GC on its last breath (aka dead)

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

The Wii-U is basically the Dreamcast sales wise. Thank god Nintendo has the money to try again, unlike Sega.

Who said they profited off GC? Nintendo made profits in those years, but they also had Gameboy which sold very well and sold lots of games. So whatever profits Nintendo made in those years was almost entirely, if not actually entirely, due to Gameboy.

Hard to know where Wii U will land. It's difficult to see it selling less than GC even now. Price cuts and the popular franchise like Mk and SSB and improving economic times (until this decade's mini-collapse) will probably see a lot of PS4bone owners decide to get a Wii U as a secondary console / one for the kids. If nothing else that should be good for about 5 million or so sales around the world over a 2 year timeframe, once the price is at around $200. But lifting LTD sales past 20 million is hardly going to be a celebration. An 80% drop in sales is so much worse than PS3's final tally compared to PS2 it seems incredible that there was essentially nothing wrong with Wii U, but it's going to squander the success of Wii far more than PS3 squandered PS2's success.

Comparing Wii U's Sales to GameCube, Wii

Spoiler alert: It is very depressing.

A season changes and another month passes, which means we likely had more confirmation that the Wii U is not selling well. With very few, if any, releases, the expectations from month-to-month are dismal. But exactly how bad? According to analyst David Gibson, a little more than 70,000 Wii Us were sold in March 2014. That means the Wii U was thoroughly outclassed by the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which both posted sales numbers in the 300,000 range. That’s not a competition; that’s a slaughter.

Here’s the full rundown of what we know for each system (most are approximate numbers, not exact):

1.            PS4 - More than 311,000

2.            Xbox One - 311,000

3.            3DS - 159,000

4.            Xbox 360 - 111,000

5.            Wii U - 70,000

6.            Wii - 28,000

7.            Vita - 10,000

Yes, the Xbox 360 is still beating the Wii U monthly. It’s not like the Wii U had much to offer this month (I defy you to name a notable release in March), but still: a nearly 9-year-old system is beating Nintendo’s latest console handily.

Let’s have some more fun with numbers. Let’s go back to comparable moments for each of Nintendo’s recent systems. Here are the sales from the Wii U, Wii, and GameCube from their second March on the market:

  Wii U (March 2014) - 70,000

  Wii (March 2008) - 721,000

  GameCube (March 2003) - 165,000

Taking it a step further, here’s where each of those three systems were at sales-wise overall at those same points:

Wii U - Between 5 and 6 million units worldwide as of March 2014

Wii - About 25 million units worldwide as of March 2008

GameCube - About 14.5 million units worldwide as of March 2003

People keep comparing the Wii U to the GameCube, but look at those numbers. They are not comparable. The Wii U is selling nearly a third as much as the GameCube. And the GameCube is still a year away from its swift and quick collapse. The GameCube might have been in third place in its generation, but it wasn’t anywhere close to the complete and total bomb that the Wii U is.

It’s a broken record at this point, but the Wii U continues to underwhelm. With indie games getting delayed, little-to-no third-party support, and a swiss cheese-like first-party calendar, things don’t look like they’re going to get better. An optimistic goal is for the Wii U to maybe cross 10 million sold worldwide, which would put it on par with the Sega Saturn and the TurboGrafx-16. With that depressing news, the best bet might be to enjoy Mario Kart and Smash Bros. and join me in asking the stars “When’s Quality of Life coming out? Can I play Mario on that?”

Nice post! And wow at the wiiu, it really is not comperable to th cube.... At all. And holy crap at the wii number! 700k+?!! Wow. I agree, enjoy smash and kart, maybe a surprise here and there, but that's about it. Hell, the cube at 14+ million, it started out pretty well, I didn't think it did that well at first. Thanks for the informative, and very eye opening thread...
