I like how people say "bah bah but nintendo made a profit off Gamecube sales" well based on this "positive" news Nintendo said "oh we can't compete" and made the wii. So although they made a profit was it a sustainable one? I can profit from sales of 2 systems with 50$ profit but is that enough or sustainable?

Sales do matter and if nintendo consoles continue to fail what gives them the incentive to stay in the console business when it's only losing profits the gameboy rake in?

sales do matter, just look at the amount of Mario's and Zelda's vs fzero and starfox

Who said they profited off GC? Nintendo made profits in those years, but they also had Gameboy which sold very well and sold lots of games. So whatever profits Nintendo made in those years was almost entirely, if not actually entirely, due to Gameboy.

Hard to know where Wii U will land. It's difficult to see it selling less than GC even now. Price cuts and the popular franchise like Mk and SSB and improving economic times (until this decade's mini-collapse) will probably see a lot of PS4bone owners decide to get a Wii U as a secondary console / one for the kids. If nothing else that should be good for about 5 million or so sales around the world over a 2 year timeframe, once the price is at around $200. But lifting LTD sales past 20 million is hardly going to be a celebration. An 80% drop in sales is so much worse than PS3's final tally compared to PS2 it seems incredible that there was essentially nothing wrong with Wii U, but it's going to squander the success of Wii far more than PS3 squandered PS2's success.
