Forums - Sales - NPD March 2014 Thread - PS4 #1 (371k), Xbox One 311k, 360 111k, WiiU ~70k, Vita close to 4 digits. Titanfall tops software

Did the NPD results surprise you?

Yes 379 53.23%

No 308 43.26%

Total:687

Suprising that PS4 outsold X1 during titanfall month in Xbox's strongest teritory.

Looks like the 100$ price drop is actually happening.

Will be interesting to see how much that improves sales.  some retailers are selling bundles for $450 right now, but they can't advertise the prce which almost defeats the purpose of selling it like that.

PS4 exactly 371k, got just confirmed.

That's it for me.

I mean, does the X1 really need to win NPD? It's doing good in America and that's all that counts.

These types of posts are hilarious .All last gen people said ps3 was a failure for losing marketshare. Now losing it in your best territory  is fine

Your saying this as if I'm an Xbox fanboy? But that's besides the point. if I was on this site back then, I would've said the same thing about the PS3. I could care less for what sales better, as long as both consoles are selling well.

The situation is significantly more dire this time than the PS3's poor position last time.

Microsoft really fumbled the 360 internationally with the relatively small number of exclusives and poor marketing. It performed magnificently in the US and to large extent the UK, but Europe was not so great. Halo/Gears are more western in appeal. So PS3 had the advantage of getting a lot of the territories that Microsoft wasn't able to sew up.

This time around? They look to be on track to losing even in their previous strongholds, and getting outright blown away outside of US/UK. Numbers in some countries on an average week such as France and Germany are as bad as FIVE to ONE.

Further, if trends continue (and with more multiplats coming that will more likely than not look worse on the XB1) with players tending to want to buy the console that their friends already own for MP, they could be behind by 2 to 1 by the end of THIS year globally. Barring a miracle, it will be even worse through the end of 2015.

Financially that makes profitability on the XB1 platform much harder. It makes it less likely to get 3rd party exclusivity, because paying for that will get out of control pretty quickly. It will go like this :

Microsoft "Hey, company X, we want your new game to be only on the XB1"

Company X "Okay, well you have 9 million consoles sold, and your competitor has 18.5 million sold, so based on our market research, you will have to compensate us for the calculated attach rate for our title on that system"

Microsoft "How much is that?"

Company X "Well, we calculate that this huge title could sell 4 million copies on the PS4, and you will have to pay us $30 per potential lost sale"

Microsoft "A HUNDRED AND TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS? Okay, how about some exclusive DLC?"

Company X "Sure"

Nintendo knows how to play the 'extra' console game historically, and make money. Microsoft simply has no idea.

A Developer don´t get $30 for each game sale... nor the Publisher (about $20 at most).

Besides, with the PS3 80mi user base and 7 years in the market, how many title sold more than 4mi on it?

And I can ensure that 90% of those 4mi+ games are either COD, GTA, FIFA, Battlefield or Assassins Creed, in other words: games that will be always multiplat.

You're on a site that tracks game sales, there really is no need to ask, just look and provide facts, or at least estimates of facts http://www.vgchartz.com/platform/3/playstation-3/

The answer you are seeking is 33, and the % that is PS3 exclusive >4M is 30%. So you can't ensure that 90% of those 4M+ are the annual 3rd party always will be multiplat franchises.

You shouldn't make statements about game sales on a game sales website without checking the accuracy of your statements first.

It has ZERO chance of winning this generation in sales IMO. But I really don't understand why there's this massive black / white scenario with console sales. Its honestly a strange concept.

I swear console warriors are just strange.

Ehh maybe casue MS them selfs just said they are in it to win not be second.

And its humen nature to be the best, 2nd means you are the first loser.

Not in business its not. All that matters in business is if you are profiting with a product. Ones that do are kept, ones that don't profit are usually cut.

I'm not saying MS is all sunshine and rainbows right now. But the console just sold 311k units in March.  That isn't bad by ANY standard. Obviously it took a lot to get them there and I think there is certainly work to be done at MS studios but reading some of the posts on GAF and here are boarderline shocking.  It really goes to show you how little actual analysis there is in the current gaming community on the internet and how much is posted / written in blind emotion / opinions.

Well, the bad thing for MS is that even though they sold ~53K more than in Feb, they didn't make more profit off  of it.  The One was cut by $50 at all major retailers, even MS own stores.  On top of that, they had to pay EA to give Titanfall away for free.  I wouldn't be surprised if they just broke even, or even had a loss, for March.

If you only look at Xb one hardware sales, given the things you mention MS had to do to keep sales up, then I think for sure it was a loss making month. But if you look at over all Xbox revenue then Xb360 hardware and software and Xbone software, and Gold subs probably keeps the division in an operating profit. But the growth can only come from Xb one hardware sales. MS can only rely on a helping hand from 360 for this year, in 2015 Xb one will have to profit on its own.

"Xbox One continues selling at a strong pace with 311,000 units sold in the U.S. in the month of March, surpassing Xbox 360 sales by more than 60 percent at the same point in time."

"Xbox 360 continues to grow its install base with 111,000 units sold in March in the U.S., more than any other seventh generation console."

And with Titanfall being the #1 selling game, guess we can still call this a victory in some respects. I mean it ain't like X1 is selling WiiU numbers.

X360 is still beasting. Can it outsell the PS2?

Ha ha ha.

That is a fair assessment and certainly true.  Like I said not everything is sugar and rainbows over at MS Studios.

That being said the Xbox One is still trending 60% ahead of the Xbox 360 in the same time frame. It sold a very healthy 311k this month. Those sales are far from poor considering the price of the console and just how amazingly positioned the PS4 is.

My only point is its FAR too early too say the One is dead. In fact its on pace to have a plenty healthy life cycle. The PS4 is just positioned to have an absolutly extrordinary one, which in perspective is making the Xbox look that much worse.

To look at two consoles that are quite possibly facing a "doomed" scenario the Vita and Wii U are much closer to that range. The One will most likely be fine, just quite a ways under the PS4's monsterous sales.
