5th Gen. Dat Zelda & Mario...

Around the Network

5th gen. PS1 era was the golden age of JRPG en 3D Platformers.

It really depends on the person. I personally prefer the 4th. The Sega Genesis is my favorite system ever. I liked the 2D graphics and gameplay was more challenging. The console war was great, and I have more fond memories.

4th gen, more quality games over all. They didn't have to try and do 3D worlds yet, so the developers work went into everything else. Also, the controls of 5th gen games were awful. Try playing the first Tomb Raider on any system (saturn, PS1, PC) and you'll see. The N64 controller also wasn't great to use

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

Fourth. I'll play a SNES over a PS1 any day. The first 3d games just haven't aged well.

Most 5th gen games have not aged well; controls, camera, and framerate are often very awkward.
The 4th gen, by comparison, holds up better.

They obviously hold up well enough to become my favourite games of all time, playing them 15 years after they released.

With the move to 3D devs had to relearn how to make games, and there was a lot of awkwardness in the transition. It set the framework for following generations, but at the cost of many trial and error missteps. So many 5th gen games are incredibly clumsy today due to problems with 3D navigation, while the 4th gen is elegant by comparison. At least in my view.

You're right, but I don't see how that makes the games any worse. In fact, awkward and clumsy mechanics can often be more charming and challenging, the old Resident Evil games being a perfect example.
