Forums - Gaming - Final Fantasy shouldn't have sequels.

I agree with you. After the fail that Final Fantasy XIII was I expected a new Final Fantasy game in the 7th gen. We ended up getting 2 sequels and the new Final Fantasy game was postponed to the 8th gen. It's bullshit and I hope they never do it again.

If sequels mean me getting a FF every 2 years instead of every 5 then I'm all for it. We all know that SE aren't the fastest when it comes to developing new FFs so if they manage to entertain me during the big ones with some sequels then they should go for it.

edit: although i really enjoyed Crisis Core

A prequel is is something different, it doesn't take from original/great stories just expands on the set up to it. The world we learned about and love remains intact.

For many of use with XIII that wasn't an option. Sequels of a game you don't enjoy, you don't by so while you might enjoy your sequel, there are (based on XIII to XIII-2 numbers) 5 million of potential customers waiting for a new game. That's 5 million x £20 (money made by the studio on a full priced game (£40-45) This is a guess) they are missing out on. Not releasing a new FF game in the 7th gen that could sell 7 million plus easy meant we as gamers spent our money elsewhere.

The don't need to be graphical powerhouses. FF 8, 9, 10 and even 11 were all made withing 5 years of each other. What changed?

Hmm, pie.

I was replaying VI the other day, and IX a few months ago. It's very annoying to me what the series has become. At least Dragon Quest is still good. Otherwise, I don't get my Jrpg fix (or any fix at all) from SQ-ENIX (although one of these days I'll play my copy of Bravely Default, lol.)

I wouldn't mind seeing the luminous engine tech-demo come to life as a Final Fantasy game, with an actually substantive story that plays on real-world themes and round characters who don't solely exist as fan-service. That would revive Final Fantasy for me.

You know what's amazing with sequels, dlc and mostly anything people are ranting about ?

You are not forced to buy them.

I believe Square said the franchise was only profitable with sequels. I can't remember if it was exactly that or something else. I'll see if I can find the exact quote later. But I do agree that I'd rather not see sequels. One of the great things about FF during the 5/6th gen was that each game gave you the chance to explore a new world once again. Last gen we didn't get that. I'm pretty sure if Lightning had only gotten one game she wouldn't be as reviled in the West as she is now with 3 games. I know that we'll see sequels with XV but I really do hope that we also get to see XVI this gen as well.

it's cause of how much they spend on their engines. They make new ones for each number iteration.

AGREED!

How about new IPs!?

They probably think people don't like JRPGs anymore or something like that...

But XIII was just terrible gameplay wise compared to every single previous FF. The fact is though - people love FF style games. But the gameplay hasn't evolved at all - it's literally gone backwards.

Sure is pretty though.

Oh yeah - and the characters are getting worse. 7,8,9 had amaaaazing characters. X was good too. Didn't play 11 and 12, but 13... what were they thinking. So annoying.

Now one is saying we have to buy them and the OP isn't talking about sequels and dlc in general which I'm sure you already know that. But FF was before Gen 7. We (gamers) spent one full gen in FF13 with 3 games and it seems that trend might continue in Gen 8. Before Gen 7 we, on average, would get 3 different iterations of FF. It just sucks that new and different FF games might get pushed back if because of sequels.

However if the sequels are great by all means keep 'em coming.

Since when are we supposed to make sense here ?

First off, even if it seems some very vocal people on the forum didn't like them, the sequels did find a public.

Second, they said sequels were necessary to justify a AAA JRPG's budget, and given what we saw this gen from AA JRPG, i can only agree.

Finally, the reason we only saw FFXIII trilogy this last 8 years is because of FFXIV 2.0. FFvXIII was planned as a 7th gen game.

I'm pretty surewe will see both a FFXV and FFXVI trilogy this gen. And let's not forget that square is more than Final Fantasy, we got some great games on handeld this gen ! From Dissidia to Bravely Default, with kingdom hearts and The world ends with you.

And I strangely didn't hear any complaints about bravely default having a sequel btw

Where did they get that idea...

1 Final Fantasy XIII PS3 2009 Role-Playing Square Enix 1.65 1.15 1.87 0.47 5.13
2 Final Fantasy XIII-2 PS3 2011 Role-Playing Square Enix 0.77 0.67 0.89 0.21 2.54
3 Final Fantasy XIII X360 2010 Role-Playing Square Enix 1.20 0.64 0.01 0.19 2.05
4 Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII PS3 2013 Role-Playing Square Enix 0.19 0.13 0.43 0.06 0.82
5 Final Fantasy XIII-2 X360 2011 Role-Playing Square Enix 0.35 0.27 0.02 0.06 0.70
6 Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII X360 2013 Role-Playing Square Enix 0.09 0.04 0.01 0.01 0.15

Because they didn't ignore the sunk costs of the first game and it's engine/platform changes. So, they reused assets from the first game and extended them over two more games. XIII-2 and LR didn't cost all that much to make since a lot of work was already done.

and while the XIII sequels did bad for a FF game, who will upset over 4+ million in sales...
