Forums - Nintendo - 3DS is cannibalizing Wii U

Not sure what you mean here. Mario World was on SNES, SNES still sold less than NES. Mario64 was on N64, N64 still sold less than SNES. Sunshine was on GCN, GCN still sold less than N64. SM3DW is on Wii U, Wii U still selling less than GCN. What's so different!?

I didn't see em myself, but I heard they had an advertising campaign going on during the holidays last year. Regardless, my point remains that the Wii U has already seen a wave of potential sales boosters that previous consoles have also seen, and like them it gained no momentum in terms of outselling it's predecessors. Why would Mario kart and smash bros. and price cuts n stuff work now all of a sudden when they never ever have before?

Because Wii is not the SNES. It is not the N64. It is not the GCN. It has different circumstances, different problems.

The price cut didn't work because it is still too expensive.  3D World produced only a mild boost because it was not what fans wanted.

Mario Kart and Smash, however, are more desirable games than 3D World, just as $200/$250 is a much more attractive price point than $300.

Some good points. Wii U really does need more games that just aren't possible on the 3ds.

that shipped saled when Ninty decided to go with the tablet controller. THey can either bring motion back to the forefront, thats not gonna happen. OR they can just make a bunch of stuff like X with crap yourself visuals that cant be done on 3ds and that hasnt been Ninty's style for a while.

Metroid Prime, Wii Sports, Zelda using the Wiimote (like SS), and Pikmin 3 are great games to differentiate WiiU from 3DS.

However I would appreciate high graphc games like X, Gamecube did get RE4, there's always hope.

??? outside of Pikmin 3 none of those games you mentioned are actully WIi U games. So im not sure what you mean.

i keep hearing this price argument. Wii U is still more expensive than the GC was? SO what? Inflation happens. Whats Ninty supposed to do drop the price to GC levels. and absorb even bigger loses, cause thats not gonna happen.

More desirable based on what!? If we look at 3DS numbers, SM3DL and MK7 are selling at roughly the same clip. Even if SSB4 was more desirable, it's sales are gonna be split with the 3DS.

And as my last post implied, you're gonna have to explain how the Wii U is different from it's predecessors and how the difference is somehow gonna allow Wii U's potential console sellers to actually sell consoles for once (despite some already failing to do so).

So then how does the Wiimote on the WiiU not make the WiiU massively unlike the 3DS? There is no Wii Sports, Wind Waker, Wii Fit, Wii Party, or NintendoLand on the 3DS.

Mario Galaxy is a 3D Mario Platformer, and often regarded as the spiritual successor to Super Mario 64. So it and DS are similar enough.

Because the Wiimote was the primary focus of the Wii, but just a secondary peripheral for Wii U.

A port of a N64 game is not a substitute for a brand new 7th gen Mario far beyond the capabilities of the DS.

And Super Mario 3D World isn't a brand new 8th gen Mario far beyond the capabilities of the 3DS?

Wiimote is not a secondary peripheral to the WiiU, it's as much a fundamental part of gameplay as before. That's like saying the 2nd screen on the 3DS is a secondary feature to 3D. :-/

It's going to be awfully quiet on the Nintendo board when Mario Kart 8's boost proves to be only a 3-4 week thing and then fades out.

It's also funny how games like Mario 3D World and Pikmin 3 and what not are now badmouthed after their release "well those were never going to sell the Wii U anyway!" when before release it was "don't worry Pikmin 3 will stop the drought, the Wii U just needs more games" and "Mario 3D Land skyrocketed 3DS sales! Of course Wii U is gonna see a big boost with 3D World!".

3D World, great as it is, is essentially just a beefed up 3D Land.

And no offense, but the second statement is just so wrong I don't know where to begin...

The price of components drops over time, often quite rapidly. Wii U will not always cost  $300 to make.

Mario Kart Wii sold 3 times as much as Mario Galaxy. (And that was itself a far more desirable game than 3D World) Smash outsold Galaxy also.

Wii U started off more expensive than prior systems; as a result it will take longer to reach its stride.

Who're you kidding? We're gonna have tons more doom threads! Also there'll be plenty of MK8 tournaments going on too! ^_^
