Forums - Sony - Thoughts on PS4 VR headset: Oculus Rift's currently biggest threat

No threat, they might be more symbiotic then anything where its best for both. Will be easier to justify a vr game if its for PC/PS4 then only one of them. Potential for Eve valkyrie vr success is that much better now that's its also on PS4vr.

Sonys buddy buddy with indies and their likely hood of driving early Vr games to market will help both. As much of the experiment success and failure with it will be theirs. Releasing games on steam and PSn will give devs a greater chance for success, better that means more dev support for both.

I think the only way this or any other form of vr takes off is for there to be demo units at big store like best buy or gamestop. People need to see why they should spend the extra money to strap something to there face instead of playing it on there tv. I know for me I have no interest in a vr headset but maybe if im able to try one it could change my mind.

I agree. TV ads for Project Morpheus would be pointless, maybe even counter-productive. To actually make people want to own it, personal live experience is THE key to success. The moment people try it out for themselves appears to be the very moment even the biggest sceptics are blown away.

I'm starting to think you're right. While some people might now buy Project Morpheus instead of Oculus Rift, the additional attention/hype for Project Morpheus will ultimately probably rather help Oculus Rift sales.

No I don't agree.
OR and Morpheus will be in completely separate markets for quite some time. It's not just the drivers you need to concern about. They don't have a unified API so you will either program for one or the other. Sony will keep the PS4 exclusivity for some time and OR probably won't be on the PS4 ever. So if you're a developer and want to develop on PC you will use OR. No point in using unofficial drivers that might only work half the time. The SDK for Morpheus is probably PS4 exclusive as well.
We might see som PC stuff with Morpheus on PC like we did with Kinect but it won't be much. There is simply no reason for any developer to use Morpheus on PC.
Another thing is that I expect OR to be more advanced and not only that, but getting several upgrades over the years while Morpheus will stay pretty much the same like the PS4.

The only chance I see here is for MS to either bring their on VR or make the OR compatibe with the X1.
