Forums - Sony - Thoughts on PS4 VR headset: Oculus Rift's currently biggest threat

Please don't post in here if all you want to mention is that you think VR headsets in general (look silly | will be a total flop | are too expensive | are similar to the Sony HMZ-T3 | are not your cup of tea | etc). This thread is about discussing the potential, price and market success of Sony's upcoming solution in comparison to similar upcoming products. Thank you.

Everything else about the opening of this thread was good except that ^

You have to live under a rock to not consider VR a potentially huge flop -- even if the experience is awesome.

In the same way you don't want your perspective mischaracterized, don't mischaracterize or leave out the logical points against VR's future.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

I think this competition will make for some great products in the future. With these VR sets usually around the $1000 range, I think if they could make something that is worthy of a purchase with little lag, I would be willing to cough up $500 for it. Yeah its alot, but when you dont need to spend the money on a big HD tv or expensive headphones or surround sound system, since its already built in, I think its a decent deal.

I'm personally going to be using CastAR so it's not going to effect me at all lol. I've tried Oculus a number of times by now and the way it tracks motion fucks me up in a span of only a few minutes due to the delays, had the same problem with the HD prototype, not sure about the latest one but I'll try that eventually as well, if Sony is using pretty much the same tech then they can go suck it as well. I'll stick to how CastAR tracks just about everything.

I thought Oculus is not even avail for sale to the public... How much is PS4 VR headset VS Oculus Rift?

And here is the problem with Peripherals that are not included with consoles. Youve seen it with Kinect 1, Move, Card reader thing for Gameboy, the origonal eyetoy, etc etc. It becomes a niche product and devs dont develop for them or have them in mind.

While VR sounds awesome on paper, and yes i would like to get VR myself, but at what price? If it becomes too steep this will surely become a product that most people will not get and if tha thappens most games wont support VR. Again, we can even use 3D as an example of last generation. Few games supported it because it was more of a niche product than anything.

With all that said im hoping either Oculus Rift of Sony makes it affordable so at least a high adopton rate gets attributed. Kinect 1 sold around 25 Million so i think the bar is to at least have a similar attach rate as Kinect 1 did.

Will it be a cool product?  Probably.  WIll it be a wildly successful product? imo Probably not.

I will only buy it if its below $500...

Being sceptical of the success or VR in general is perfectly fine, I just wanted to make clear from the very start that this is beyond the scope of this thread, which was intended to focus on how Project Morpheus compares and might compete with similar products.

So this thread simply wasn't meant to be a generic "Post your opinion on VR headsets" thread. There's already dozens or even hundreds of such threads. In my opinion, they all tend to turn into a collection of the same statements over and over and over. But if that's what you want to discuss, simply post there.

It has potential to be competitive with OR but Sony is trying to get a completely different audience. It's going to be hard to appeal this to families that play on their huge screens unless its $200 or less.

I don't quite understand. Why a "completely different audience"? And what does it have to do with families and "huge screens"?

Console owners and PC gamers are different audiences. Believe it or not, a good amount of console owners are casuals with families.

Well, I agree that many consoles are owned by families, and that families won't be early adopters of VR technology. But neither product has families as their target audience, which will rather be tech-savvy early adopters interested in VR. Due to the price tag alone, the majority of PS4 owners will not buy a PS4 VR headset, just like the majority of PC owners will not buy a Oculus Rift.

The main point of my OP was pointing out that Oculus Rift and Sony VR headset will not have distinct audiences (like: people interested in using VR on PC will buy Oculus Rift, people interested in using VR on their PS4 will buy Project Morpheus) and Project Morpheus will eat into Oculus Rift sales, because Project Morpheus will be an attractive alternative for everyone originally interested Oculus Rift - but not the other way around.

So ultimately, there will be a certain rivalry between Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus, and actual release dates will be a critical factor. If Project Morpheus even manages to release before Oculus Rift, Oculus Rift might seriously suffer, as many people will buy Project Morpheus even though they don't even own a PS4.

I think the only way this or any other form of vr takes off is for there to be demo units at big store like best buy or gamestop. People need to see why they should spend the extra money to strap something to there face instead of playing it on there tv. I know for me I have no interest in a vr headset but maybe if im able to try one it could change my mind.

Also sony needs to make it work with pc for it to a success

does anyone think they know what price it will be or when it will release
