Well, I agree that many consoles are owned by families, and that families won't be early adopters of VR technology. But neither product has families as their target audience, which will rather be tech-savvy early adopters interested in VR. Due to the price tag alone, the majority of PS4 owners will not buy a PS4 VR headset, just like the majority of PC owners will not buy a Oculus Rift.
The main point of my OP was pointing out that Oculus Rift and Sony VR headset will not have distinct audiences (like: people interested in using VR on PC will buy Oculus Rift, people interested in using VR on their PS4 will buy Project Morpheus) and Project Morpheus will eat into Oculus Rift sales, because Project Morpheus will be an attractive alternative for everyone originally interested Oculus Rift - but not the other way around.
So ultimately, there will be a certain rivalry between Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus, and actual release dates will be a critical factor. If Project Morpheus even manages to release before Oculus Rift, Oculus Rift might seriously suffer, as many people will buy Project Morpheus even though they don't even own a PS4.
