I love the idea especially for racing games since it would increase the experience a lot if you would be "in the car" and it would even help a lot to estimate the distance to the next braking point and stuff like that so that I would pay probably around 400 bucks if it would support games like Forza and Gran Turismo and if it would also work at least for PC. Less if it would really work only on one console since I would feel stupid to buy different headsets which work only on one console and not the PC for such a price.

But as long as not enough games would be supported I would probably not buy it at all as long as it isn't something like 150 bucks and I still can't imagine that all these games would support it anytime soon. Hope I'm wrong.

I'm not saying VR=TV.

Also you haven't even used VR. Come on man.

If you read my OP you will see that I said I will almost certainy  buy it despite what I am saying here.

But it is niche... and its a small niche.

You cant get away from the fact that in this guise it is a very solitary and insular experience.  I'm sorry but that simply isnt mass market, not even close.

It's 2014 dude, everyone is anti-social.

If a person wanted a bunch of VR headsets so that friends and family could enjoy them together, that'd cost an insane amount of money. I don't think that's a problem though. I absolutely hate this trend, but it's a rarity when a game offers local mp. The PS4 and XBONE are also solitary experiences the vast majority of the time. In order to actually play Killzone Shadow Fall together in the same room with three friends, you'd need to buy 4 PS4s, 4 games, and have 4 TVs. Just like with "social" VR that'd cost an insane amount of money. Didn't stop Killzone from selling 2.1 million copies or the PS4 from breaking records.

As long as the VR device has good marketing, it'd be an easy sell to gamers.

honestly i cant answer this question, and i dont think anyone who hasnt tried VR can give you a proper answer either. i need to try it first then i can answer.

personally i think i would love VR, i can see it has its issues, mainly not being able to see or hear whats going on around you, so you cant use it if your taking care of the kidsn for example. but as i said, i have to use it first.

Not really...

But it raises an interesting question.

What would people be willing to pay for a VR headset if, as seems likely, Sony and possibly MS released such a thing for PS4 and ONE.

I hppen to think the pricing will render the devices niche.

BUT... I'm a gadget mug, so I will pronbably buy one only to suffer buyers remorse as it gathers dust in a corner.

Sorry to be a grammar Nazi but it's "more than..."

OT I doubt I will buy one.

Ultimately best uses for VR head set are FPS (or rather games in FP perspective) and Driving, and I don't like FP games and driving games are not high on my list of favourite genres, though I do like them. And I think Kinect / Move integration is essential for full immersion for non-driving games. Playing with VR and standard controller is only semi-immersive. If you are visually and auditorily immersed but not kinesthetically immersed (i.e. holding a gun, throwing punches, stabbing with a knife, shooting with bow and arrow) then the experience is diminished. And further real full immersion means the ultimate VR experience requires a 360deg treadmill to allow for natural walking / running.

OTOH Move enabled FPS games I like beter than FPS games controlled with standard controls. So perhaps I would like VR FP games. I'm just not willing to pay the sort of money it would require to find out.

I also think introduction of VR would possibly need to be a joint venture, with a univeral design and functionality, with Sony and MS and maybe even Nintendo, and even EA, Acti or Ubi, because, as you say, it will be a niche market product and you really need the sort of install base that would come with every platform on board to make it economically viable to make really good AAA quality games for the tech.

If I ever do buy VR it will be because there is a real killer app for it and I will be a late late adopter. Probably even waiting for VR 2.0 or 3.0.

I would be more likely to go for something semi-VR, being the Google glasses sort of thing

huh?

In your poll you have "More then $400" as an option.

I think discreet 1080p screens is still pretty low for VR. Considering you blow it up to 90 degrees horizontally (which is only half of what you're aware of and can reach by turning your eyes only) it would be like sitting half a screen width from your tv, or 1.5ft from a 42" screen.
Plus the more you blow up the size the more frame rate begins to matter. Current consoles can't handle 2x1080p at 60fps.

I really want to try it, but the numbers all point against it becoming a big success. Either it's very expensive with still lacking dual 1080p screens and struggling games, or more affordable with dual 720p which will only work well with simpler stylized games.

I would still buy a $300 dual 720p version to experience 6 degrees of freedom for looking around. I won't get my hopes up that it will become my primary way of playing games.

I'd pay like...nothing, I don't think it's something necessary.

Personally I'd pay $400 if it was 1080p, but a good mass market price would be $200.
