Forums - Gaming - Kojima: If we don't push limits, 'games will never be considered culture'

Fans of Metal Gear Solid are used to the franchise pushing boundaries. With that said, the pending release of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes sparked somecontroversy when it received the ESRB's rarely givenSexual Violence warning. We recently had a chance to sit down with Hideo Kojima, the series creator and director, during a roundtable discussion. Kojima had this to say when asked why graphic and adult content were important to the franchise.

More than thinking about sensitive things, if we don't cross that line games will only be games. If we don't try and go beyond that, we won't be able to achieve what movies or novels have achieved. I didn't want to stay away from things that might have been considered sensitive.. But if we don't go that far, games will never be considered as [a part of] culture.

Kojima also spoke about the hit TV series Breaking Bad, citing the show's ability to push the limit in order to get their message across. He said that not all games have to go as far as Metal Gear Solid V does, but that it was necessary for the message he wanted to convey.

One of the main topics of Metal Gear Solid V is this chain of revenge. I know I will probably face a lot of criticism because of [the violence], but I really wanted to portray that accurately.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will act as a prologue for The Phantom Pain's larger story, and is set to launch on March 18th. It will be available for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Games are already considered culture. They are a rather obvious part of pop culture.

True. But it's not one that's held in high regards though. And that is what he is talking about.

According to IGN, the ending is very disturbing (No spoilers in this link):

That sounds interesting. I wonder what it is.

No Kojima they will never be considered art if that's what you mean.

We won't enjoy it even if it's true. It will probably be censored again. That's how games are looked at, as something that's keeping children busy. I want to experience "the Clockwork Orange" of videogames before i'm dead :D

I have. Feeling that this game will be underwhelming.

His intention is right, but he will never succeed because it is not in his DNA as a japanese game maker. Movies and Novels are great thanks to great narratives and profound characters and dialogue.

This is not something video game designer, especially those from Japan, are known for.

Sure there are exceptions, but they are exceptions.

If you want to make a game that has the impact of a great book or movie, read great books and watch great movies, then hire excellent literary staff and make a great piece. Otherwise, keep dreaming.

You don't watch anime i'm guessing, right? If yes, you should give Death Note a try and see for yourself what kind of drama a japanese mind can conjure up.

LOL ,, but sadly kojima attempt of wannabe hollywood director has failed as mgs4 was quite boring compared to the othe rMGS games. FOr me Mgs1 an d2 are the best :). He has to understand messgae hes tryign to ocnvey in teh game ,, has to be interesting and not long , monotomous and most importantly it has to make sense lool.

The last half of Death Note is a piece of sh*t.

OT: 3 hours cutscenes confirmed for MGS V

Nintendo and PC gamer

@osed-- 3 HOURS you mean more then half of phantom pain for cutscenes. Remember the last scene of mgs4 was at least 1 hr and 30misn of cutscenes and after credits was close to it . That alone is nearly bigger. Since phantom pain is 200 tiem sbigger ,, i expect teh numbe rof cutscenes to increase by 200% lol
