Forums - Gaming - Killzone ShadowFall Multiplayer runs at only 960 x 1080 resolution

Wow, that is so much different than I was led to believe. Over an over again it was thrown out that it was true 1080p 60fps. How that was the only test of 'true next gen gaming.'

Is this now the end of 'frame gate?' One can only hope.

Who ever said the game was true 60fps? Gorrila have said since before the games launch it wasn't always 60fps :P The resolution thing is certainly an odd technique, but considering how good it looks for MP, the way they are creating the 1080p image certainly seems to be working.

Regardless, the whole resolution arguments are silly. It's what you are showing at that resolution, not the resolution itself (as I've been saying for weeks). That's why Killzone's SP is so impressive, and also why Titanfall gets so much shit.

Wow how strange is that, having the horizontal resolution but leaving the vertical resolution the same?

Never heard of that before.

gran turismo 5? gran turismo 6?

as much as people criticise it, it looks better than having to reduce vertical resolution.

also, to those comparing this with the resolution on ports of last gen games or "high-end PC gaming" .... LOL.

What you see on your TV is 1920x1080p... I don't get your post.

ok in that case i play ryse on my tv and ryse is 900p but my tv displays 180p so i am ryse at 1080p according to yoru logic lol. my quite was tryign to say that now resolutions doesn't matter anymore as non of us could tell that kz mp was less then 720p. and was trying to tell puggsly that even though xbox one has weaker specs,, its still can hold its ground evident by ryse as it got nominatedd for graphics at dice awards.. Also try to point out its funny thta kz is in that resolution and not full hd despite having 40% more gpu power lol

Wat. Killzone's MP is showing you two frames of 960x1080 together at once, which results in a full none up-scaled image of 1920x1080. To people playing the game it looks pretty much identical to 1080p, with an odd motion blur when running about. So what does that have to do with Ryse? That's an single 1600x900 image.

This is also just for MP. A better comparison to Ryse is Killzone's SP, which is full 1080p/30-40 fps (about 62.2 million to 83 million pixels per second). Ryse on the other hand is 900p/26-32 fps (about 37.5 million to 46 million pixels per second).

Regardless, comparing the two is stupid. Ignoring them being completely different types of game, it's pretty obvious from the numbers above that they achieve what they do in very different ways.

So, does this mean that the Xbox fanboys now have some ammo in those resolution threads or drive by resolution comments about 1080/60. This gen is getting interesting. Its never fun when one side has all the cards.

No. Ryse is 900p upscaled to 1080p... KZ is 1920x1080p each two frames... it uses two frames to show the full 1920x1080p picture... the native display in your HDTV is 1920x1080p.

That's why you can't say it was a lower resolution because it is not... what you see is a full 1920x1080p image.

As I suspected it does a combination of blending and upscaling depending on your movements.
(Tried multiplayer, got 600 points and 1 kill!)

Stationary:

vs turning

Seems the horizontal resolution is upscaled to 1920. (I was spinning around on my axis, turning fast enough to see upto 6 after images staring at the screen)

Different strategy while strafing:

The cables are super imposed from the previous frame, causing some nasty interference with the lights. But overall the image is a lot sharper than during rotation.

While running it seems to add some sort of radial motion blur to hide the effect

Overall the image quality on multiplayer seems to be toned down more than just resolution.

There is no upscale... each two frames creates a full 1920x1080 image.

There most definitely is while turning. I was spinning so fast that to my eyes I saw multiple after images of for example the green outlined soldier. My eyes were basically blending multiple of the 60fps images together. If the game uses frame blending while turning, the soldier would be twice in that shot.

While strafing it looks like they do a combination. Notice how the big black cables have an after image to the right while I'm strafing left. It's a bit mangled by the jpg compression, but you can still see the vertical black lines. That's from the previous frame, the cables are right in front of me and sliding by at high speed from my point of view. If the game didn't fill in the gaps you would see all striped cables, but it does fill in the rest of the cable where I am. So they use some kind of intelligent combination between frame blending and upscaling (or interpolating horizontally, whatever you want to call it). Perhaps based on the rate of movement some things get upscaled while the slower moving background gets combined with the previous frame.

It's far more computationally expensive then a simple frame blend. I wonder if maybe a horizontal upscale of a 1440x1080 might not have the same speed. Ofcourse this approach delivers the best visuals when you stand still or walk slowly.

Ethomaz was saying the tv is outputing is 1080p there fore is 1080p. I can't remember teh exact words,, but something along those lines.  So i was giving an example where ryse is native 900p but my tv also outputs 1080p therefore based on his logic it should be 1080p  a well . Its not identical to 180p,, theres a huge difference betwenn sp and mp .. it not even close to being sharp like teh sp capaign . i played it agian last night and it looks terrible in compariosn to the SP mode/.  I own both games  lol.
