Forums - Gaming - Hey guys hear me out regarding PC vs Current Gen "Graphics" (and a bit on Wii U and mobile gaming)

seeing this.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=179302

and seeing people discussing how "Shitty" Titanfall looks on PC , and how "not big of a difference" between last gen consoles and current gen ones for example on this video

PC gaming was never about "Better graphics" only,  its about running the game better, better framerate, better field of view, bigger resolutions, better textures.

it sounds cheesy but its How the game meant to be played before porting / "compressing" / dumbed down to consoles and fixed in a specific setting, the PS3 and Xbox 360 suffered greatly because of this , that developers focused so much on graphics that the consoles weren't built to handle them , they were built with PS2 and Xbox engineering in mind, back when it was very hard to fit console architect into a console, nowadays the same architect is found even on tablets, hence why they release them so rapidly , so now the PS4 and Xbox One are basically Mini PCs , they have all the components of PCs same RAM same CPU and same GPU architect ,exactly like Mike Cerny, so now its way easier to port the exact copies of PCs only "compressed" of course the PC has the advantage of being not compressed and more versatile to new technology but since they are all the same architect you will see the difference mostly lies in technical terms. (framerate, lag , tearing ...etc)

Developers now are not trying to push boundaries  in technical depertmant  they're trying to stabalize technology and focus on making things more playable and less buggy this time around with less focus on making "BETTER GRAPHICS!!", because they can't afford to make the same mistakes they did with previous generation as the PS3 and Xbox 360 are the worst consoles to develop games on because they were like the deformed middle ground between PC architect and console architects, they were neither and were a bitch to port games on, hence why you seen games run so badly and then patched so rapidly and took so long to port, to put it metaphorically It was like eating coffee with one chopstick, you're not supposed to eat coffee, and you can't eat anything with one chopstick , now PS4 and Xbox One are basically mini PCs , they are no longer "Console architects" but rather straight up PC architects,  this is a GOOD thing, its easier and literally everyone can make games on them, it is the same thing for PS Vita which is why you see too many indie games on it, its basically a tablet with buttons, I'm not sure about 3DS but I bet only thing it needs is just optimize the second screen which i'm sure only takes is a matter of throwing things into two different excutable files that would play the same time on both screens, same thing if you have a PC with two monitors it doesn't take much effort to make.

the same is SADLY not true for Wii U , it is based on last generation architect the "deformed PC bastard child" architect, hence why you don't see many developers bothering themselves with porting games on it, because they have to build them from ground up just like they did with PS3 and Xbox 360 , so they rather just focus on the "money makers" that require less resources and get more profit (Steam , PS4 , Xbox One) , and you probably guessed it, its easier to you or anyone to make games for PS4 and Xbox One than to make games for PS3 and X360 because of that same reason.

and you can thank mobile gaming for that, because they finally figured out that the masses don't really care about how detailed a character's hairline looks but rather how fluidly and how easier to get into the gameplay is. which may be or may be not a good thing, but it depends on the developer, they right now need to make games have less tutorials and more "figure out yourself" kind of mentality hence why Dark Souls and casual mobile games are so popular, but thats a different topic

Like always you shouldn't celebrate when a game has "AMAZING GRAPHIX!!!" you should celebrate when a game is good, because of mobile games developers can not take chances and make crappy tech demos any more (Crysis) because people are burned out from them, so they make games that are fun to play because console gaming / PC  gaming needs to stand out from being a niche market and be less complex and have less bugs/updates/patches ..etc , this is again a good thing it means more freedom to make good games with unique style and characters rather than glorified tech demos for that niche market that started with PS3 and Xbox 360 that focuses too much on "amazing how this game looks so good that runs on a shitty console" like Ryse, the Xbox One doesn't need games like that, it needs good games, a lot of people say how bad Titanfall looks for example and expect it to look like the second coming of Jesus Crysis but you would be compeletely missing the point here if you just judge the game on that.

While gameplay is the all important factor when judging a game...i do believe there is a market for games that play well and look amazing too. This market is a bit different from the mobile market...

I take a game like uncharted...i thoroughly enjoy playing uncharted. It has solid gameplay but the gameplay inst the sole focus of the game. The game places equal emphasis on atmosphere, story, cinematics, set pieces etc. And together these elements put together make for one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Its right up there with Diablo 2 and mario brothers.

So yeah i think striving for better looking games or at least making that option available to developers should still be one of the goals platform manufacturers try and attain.

Also with more powerful hardware, it doesn't only increase visual aspects but it can add to games in ways we never thought of before. More realistic AI, bigger more vivid worlds etc.

Yet on the so called "next gen" consoles and with a game like thief, that doesn't seem to be a technical marvel, we are struggling to hit 1080p 30fps. This catches peoples attention..because is that all next gen is? Is that the promise of next gen? Remembering that console limitations have a massive impact on the speed at which things develop on PC's as well...

So yeah graphics and technology certainly isn't the be all end all..and gameplay will always be king but its a good thing that we keep track of technological advancements and constantly benchmark how far we have come and what benefits gamers can reap from these advancements.

Intel Core i7 3770K [3.5GHz]|MSI Big Bang Z77 Mpower|Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 2 x 4GB|MSI GeForce GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr 2|OCZ Vertex 4 128GB|Corsair HX750|Cooler Master CM 690II Advanced|

No idea what I've just read...I guess TL;DR is - graphics are not important, gameplay is. TBH, I appreciate both.

As for next "amazing graphics", in this generation there is a big chance for PC version to look vastly superior than console ports...since both consoles are relatively weak even by current PC standards, and there seems to be more interest in making PC games than in previous gen (even exclusives), it is quite possible we will see even greater impact than what original Crysis did in 2007.

Speaking of Crysis, unlike opinion of many people who haven't even played the game, 1st installation in that franchise is actually quite decent (though nowhere near best game that Crytek made, which is FarCry 1) and I would take it over most FPS games in previous gen.

you want "Better graphics" and was disappointed that developers don't want to push hardware to it's limit and make terrible buggy games like they did last gen, that isn't good for the industry, they should be focusing on making games run better.

Its a management problem because companies want graphically competetitive games but when it comes to testing and fixing bugs, they dont want to spend the resources.

If it were a regulation where consumers can put together a petition to block the further sales of a game, then the management staff would change the resource allocations (between graphics and bug fixing) and distribute it more appropriately.

The difference between PC and console won't be small. It will be enormous. It in fact already is. That being said when new generations of engines come out you will begin to see PC vastly outpacing consoles again.

Witcher 3 alone will be proof of this. Sorry but the console versions won't even be close. They'll be great I'm sure as CD Projekt Red are incredible but there will be a substantial difference.

That being said yes gameplay is important but judging PS4 / XB1 graphics on launch games is in no way indicative of what games will look like when true next gen engines start releasing.

Well... PC still has better graphics on virtually on games, the reason why TitanFall doesn't look that good on PC is cause its running on Source Engine 2 which is a really, really, really, old engine... I mean, there is not much you can push on that old engine lolll. I am actually more surprised the X1 version doesn't look the same as the PC version cause of how old the engine actually is

I mean heck, Crysis from 2007 looks better than 75% of the games these days from a pure technical/realism level

But I do agree with the PC being better in graphix, fps, FOV and etc

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Sorry, but that's just wishful thinking. As long as people keep choosing the better looking game when placed side by side, and reviewers give buggy games a pass in favor of amazing spectacles, devs will keep doing as they have been doing. So far day 1 patches are going no where, as well as games released with bugs.

Anyway spending less time on optimizing and making better graphics is in no means a guarantee that the gameplay will be better or there will be less bugs. There are plenty cutting edge games without bugs and good gameplay, as well as very basic looking games with bad gameplay and game breaking bugs. It's different teams that make the engine, artwork, gameplay, and do quality assurance.

Having the same architecture all around, easier hardware to work with and better dev tools will definitely help with the bugs and stability. Still in no menas a guarantee that this gen won't produce a ps3 like Skyrim.

Mobile and Indie games are always popular to drag into the gameplay over graphics debate. However over 90% of them are crap. Most of the remainder are 1 trick ponies, that usually become repetitive / boring after an hour, or are only interesting to a small niche. And ofcourse it is easier to make a bug free decent performing indie game with simple game mechanics than a complex 60+ hour open world rpg.

For the last time, Crysis 1 is not a tech demo. Its one of the best shooters Ive ever played. Tech demos don't get a 91 on metacritic.
Otherwise I agree with everything you said, including "deformed PC bastard child"

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine
