Because only day1/week1 sales matter nowadays.
Its a terrible way to view the gaming industry, on the opening week alone. Sure, GTAV made sales records in its opening week but it still sits way behind the likes of Wii Sports, and is slightly behind MKWii.
Nintendo create their games with legs in mind, not a week 1 sales headline.
You Call 198,000 On the 1st week a bomb? If it wasn't for the Knack bundle its number 1 game this week. SMH

Agreed.,
Nintendo's whole Wii U marketing division should be fired, their incompetence is staggering.

Idk im pretty sure when a company releases a product that costs tens of millions of dollars to make they dont usually expect it to make all that money back in 2 days. |
you're the first one talking about companies now.

No way Tropical Freeze cost "tens of millions". The game was in development right after DKCR and the assembly line was fresh. |
It did lol. 3 years of development is actually a pretty long time.
With advertising at least $20m and possibly even $30m.
Pretty standard budget.
If it has bombed (I don't see any sales figures) it's probably because when nintendo are in need of something new and unique to sell their console, they've had Retro make something that is almost identical to the previous thing that people already have.

I'm PRETTY sure that DKC Returns sold 540k on an userbase almost TEN TIMES the size of the Wii U's current userbase... Essentially: DKC:TF - 240k - 5.7 mil userbase DKC:R - 540k - 60 mil userbase It sold almost half what Returns did on ONE TENTH the userbase. And I didn't even check what the userbase size when Returns released in 2010, I just guessed that number, but it's no doubt MASSIVELY larger than the Wii U's current one. It's not really bombing, especially considering it will most likely top 1+mil easily, and see a boost when Mario Kart 8 releases (which will most likely see a boost in hardware). |
You should've checked that again.
DKC:TF FW is 200k + Others (220k with Others)
DKC:R FW is 790k + Others (over 900k with Others)
Wii userbase was 76m back then. But you can't just calculate like that as it doesn't exactly work that way.
I would say DKR:TF is seen as a failure because it didn't help the Wii U's sales in any significant way.
It's to bad the Wii U up to this point was treated more like an addition by Nintendo rather than a new console hence all the Wii U games replacating experiences from games that Nintendo have allready released on the 3DS and Wii.

C'mon now. Please dont try and associate the milking of Nintendo games to the likes of any other franchise in videogames. There were 2 god of wars on the playstation 2. 2 god of wars on the playstation 3. Thats 4 games. Thats all in a 8 year span. There were 3 uncharted games on the ps3. Thats all in a 6 year span. Put that against mario releases in on year. In 2013 alone we saw over 10 mario related games. Thats all in 1 year. It not me thats suffering with no unique ips to play on the playstation, Uncharted 2 introduced a multiplayer mode that fun and different from other multiplayers out there, so has God Of War. No one asked for these changes and additions, but the developers found a way to expand on the game and by god they took chances. They tooks risks. Ratchet & Clank has added remote play with the Vita. Buy the game play it remotely from any internet connection. Almost all ps4 games will have remote play. Where are the 3DS/WII-U remote play ? Again, im not suffering here, its the nintendo gamer that gets the shaft and continues to keep coming back for more. Speak with your wallet.........

Yes I can easily compare them, Mario is way overused ill give u that but ur last post also said things like Smash Bros, Kirby, Metroid, Donkey Kong those games are not milked. How many mainline Donkey Kong games have there been since 2000? Only 2. How about Smash Bros? This will be its 4th since it started in 1999. Metroid? 4 on consoles and 3 on handhelds since 2002. Zelda? 1 on GC, 1 on Wii, 1 on GC/Wii, 2 on DS, 1 on 3DS since 2002. Mario Kart? 1 per console/handheld, this will be its 6th since 2000. Star Fox/F-Zero havent been seen In nearly a decade and games like Metroid/Donkey Kong/Pikmin had similar layoffs at one point as well and Kid Icarus went over 20 years without a game before being brought back.
Uncharted 2/God of War Ascension added multiplayer? So did Mario Kart/Smash Bros last generation. Ratchet & Clank has remote play? Every Wii U game has off TV play.
U also forgot about the handheld versions of GoW/Uncharted. That puts it at 6 GoW games from 2004-2013 and 4 Uncharted games from 2007-2011. Killzone, 5 from 2004-2013. Resistance, 4 from 2006-2012. LittleBigPlanet, 4 from 2008-2012. Gran Turismo, 7 since 1998. Ratchet & Clank, not sure I think over 10 since it started in 2002.
From Microsoft, 5 mainline Halos since 2001. Gears of War, 4 from 2006-2013. Forza, 6 from 2005-2013. Fable, 3 from 2004-2010. EA-25 Maddens in 25 years. Like 8 Battlefied games since it started about a decade ago. FIFA easily 15-20 in as many years. At least 10 Need for Speeds In as many years. Ubisoft-6 Assassins Creeds since 2007 not including DS/PSP/Vita installments. Just Dance-5 since 2009. Splinter Cell-6 since 2002. Activision-10 Call of Duties since 2003. Tony Hawk had like 8 installments in as many years. Guitar Hero? Too many to count. Final Fantasy has had 8 since 2001. Tales of I think had 4-5 last generation. Monster Hunter has 4 numbered entries since 2004 with god knows how many ports/upgrades.
And again what massive changes do any of these games add from one installment to the next? In most cases very little so why single out Nintendo when many other companies do the same as well?
