Forums - Gaming - MS leaving the console race would be good for gamers.

Everyone wants to hold on to their shiny boxes!

Say competition is bad, and everyone loses their minds!

One standard format. Worked out fine for HD DVD vs BluRay, VHS vs Betamax, etc. it would work for consoles too.
Just because their is no competition right now for BluRay in terms of home film storage media, it's ok. Your not being bent over a barrel. When we only had VHS, the world didn't collapse!

It'll be fine, stop worrying!

Sony want to make money by selling art, Nintendo want to make money by selling fun, Microsoft want to make money.

I think ms should stay in the home console with Sony and nintendo

Wait, what?!

Yes, I beleive that a three console race ends up being bad for gamers, and that it would be best for everyone if Microsoft would leave.

Why?

Right now console gamers are split across two systems, Xbox and PlayStation.  If this was just Playstation, then studios could take bigger risks with new ideas and new IP's when everyone is all using the same hardware to play on (i.e it lowers costs at the studios end).

But what about Nintendo?

As much as I love 'em let's be honest, Nintendo have had no real presence in the home console market since the N64.  Sure Wii sold a lot of units, but mainly to people who bought it as a one off to play Wii Sports (i.e, your nan), and now those people have moved on to Candy Crush.  However, Sony should have some competition so they don't have a total monoply plus there are enough gamers who will buy two systems as well as die hard Nintendo fans to keep them in the market with a profitable but outside share.

Say that again.

I think a Future where Sony dominate, MS leave and Nintendo are a profitable minority is best for everyone.  Studios can take bigger risks as pretty much everyone has the same machine, so as gamers we probably end up with a better selection of games.  Although if this ever did happen I very much doubt Nintendo would actually survive, but I would like to see them contine as they do add a lot of gameplay inovations.  However I think not only have the people spoken, but Sony do make better consoles then anyone else.

But by this logic, wouldn't it be better if it was only Nintnedo?

Probaby, but let's be at least a little bit realistic here.  Nintendo is out of the console race, and gamers haven't accepted them since 1996.  The console wars are going to claim another brand in this generation and it is not going to be Sony.  Out of Xbox and Nintendo, I wouldn't miss Xbox.

Monopolies are bad bro. You ever taken econ 101? You should. Not only would it be a Monopoly it could potentially be a Monopsony ( dont let the sony at the end fool you, this is a real word and basically means the opposite of a Monopoly, on the demand side, where you either have only ONE buyer or you have only ONE gateway for people to buy your product ).

SONY would have a monopoly in supplying consoles to us, therefore could jack prices way high with zero competition. There would be no insentive to give us consumers the best product they could make. Instead they could make very minor updates, charge a load of money for it, and we could do nothing about it because there would be no alternative to buy from.

SONY would also have a monopsony in who could be allowed onto their console. They could charge developers _whatever_ they wanted, make whatever requirements they wanted, kickbacks, etc and there would be nothing developers could do about it because there would be no alternative console.

But last I checked there are dozens of different companies who make those things, all in competition with one another constantly pushing each other to improve their products or risk going under.  If one company, say Sony, had a monopoly on the manufacture and sale of all the home video electronics, then we'd still be using Betamax and MiniDiscs players.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

No... just... no.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo is the perfect balance in the gaming industry. You think the quality of games would be the same if one of them disappears?

Microsoft leaving would be catastrophic unless they sell it to someone who can do good things with it, or unless Nintendo steps their game up massivally, has 3rd party support on par with PS4 and keeps making good exclusives. PS4 vs Wii 2? Could work, however I doubt this since Nintendo doesn't have these 'hardcore' exclusives (God of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us etc). PC is a whole other league than the PS4, and Wii U, well... lets not talk about that, that would need to be repaplaced to compete.

Competition is an excellent thing. Lets just purely talk about Xbox and Playstation for now:

  • What state would Playstation Network be in if Xbox Live never would have existed or Microsoft wouldn't have made a big push with Xbox 360? Probably much, much worse.
  • Games with Gold never would have existed if Sony never came up with the Instant Game Collection.
  • Without Sony, the Xbox One would have had Used-Game policies and 24 hours check ins.
  • Without the innovations Microsoft made on the Xbox 360 controller, the Dualshock 4 controller probably would have been much worse.
  • Without competition, hardware in both PS4 and XB1 probably would be a lot worse.
  • Without both Microsoft and Sony making their own, good games, the other would have no reason to make even better games.
  • Competition is key: Sony thought that after the beast called the PS2, they could easily dominate the next-gen (PS3 vs. Xbox 360), so they forced a high price and a very late release on us, with absolute shit architecture. Were they wrong? Hell yeah they were wrong! What made them fix all this later? Microsoft's Xbox 360. Now look at Microsoft. Microsoft thought that after the success called the Xbox 360, they could easily dominate this gen (PS4 vs Xbox One). So, they tried to force things on us like 24 hours check ins, used games policies, a ridiculous high price for the hardware you get and an always on Kinect you're forced to buy and use. Were they wrong? Yes, they were wrong!

If Microsoft leaves the console industry, we'll all be doomed unless one of these 2 scenarios happens:

  1. Someone buys the Xbox brand and does excellent, excellent stuff with it.
  2. Nintendo comes with a new console. Hardware is on par or petter than the PS4. Huge increase in 3rd party support, better network, more western based exclusives
  3. Or, DOOM.

You're trying to wow us with your education when your argument has large holes in it?  What about substitute platforms like pc or the ever growing mobile sector? If you're gonna use those ten dollar words then please put some thought into it.  You also forgot about Nintendo.

So I'll just say that I disagree.

LMFAO

So Sony could just fuck over the consumer?  Competition is better for the consumer idk how people don't get that.
