Forums - Microsoft - sebbbi (Xbox One programmer) on B3D lays out effective use of ESRAM (technical)

That's nothing new, packing data in bit streams to save memory. Sort of fixed lossy compression, same as all video is packed into a 4:2:2 chroma subsampled 12bpp stream before further compression (color resolution reduced to 25% since it's not as visible as brightness). Also the same as running reflections, lights, shadow maps at quarter the resolution which is quite normal in games.

That makes moving memory around a bit faster too as there is less to move. But you get a little overhead from having to unpack and repack the bitstream when you need to work on it. Plus you might see some color banding issues in areas. So it's 1080p, but just like video not all 1080p content is created equally.

It's always a tight balancing act. Reduce the memory footprint by throwing more processor cycles at a problem, or use more memory to reduce processor demand. There's not 1 universal solution.

Or to put it in another way, what the op is proposing is a more sophisticated way of upscaling, reducing the fidelity of the individual elements instead of the whole frame buffer.

This must be what that 1080p SDK helps with. I will be interested in seeing if that isn't just talk.

Its interesting that this is now the 3rd develloper since the new SDK rollout at the start of the month to say this. In this case a 3rd party correcting a Sony first party. Which is Rare.

Who's the other two if I may ask, also do you have links to said articles about these developers stating so? Cheers.

Well devs will have to master it if they want 1080P on Xbone. It may take some time. I for one am very interested to see how the big annual franchises (AC, COD, BF) compare in say, 3 years time. I suspect they'll all be 1080P on Xbox.

Yeah, you could say it's the closest thing to secret sauce Xbox has.

Just to think these stinkers are anual depress me beyond belief =/

How popular is Fifa in Brazil? Or you guys still loyal to the PES disaster

What those devs prompted me to think was: there will be rather different optimization paths for x-platform vs. native PS4 games.
The former will not really play to PS4's strengths as much, which is stuff that XBone simply cannot attempt,
but PS4's compute unit and GPGPU thread advantage (ROP to some extent, although with the 64bit GCN as mentioned, that may not be as hard a limit as previously thought)
all will be able to gain some advantage over XBone, including framerate but potentially other aspects of rendering.
You can see in their convesation the XBone dev is talking about reducing the quality of certain things, or relying on main memory to keep up, and flat out ignoring some lighting techniques...
The fact that the XBone dev talks about using GPGPU compute to enable parity, while XBone's GPU is both gimped in compute units and GPGPU threads seems like that is pushing hard against their limit,
the PS4 doesn't need GPGPU for that, but has plenty of it on call for whatever they want to use it for (including efficiencies mentioned by the XBone dev, which just allow the PS4 even more bandwidth for other things).
It's sad that people who can't remotely follow this stuff get distracted by things like 1080p or even frame rate and treat them as fixed points of comparisons,
they are merely one side effect of GPU power, while things like shadows, lighting, tesselation and AA are other usages.
It's hardly that it is IMPOSSIBLE for XBone to EVER have 1080p games, it is just that PS4 has more power to deliver richer experiences by whatever metric.

More popular than PES, that is for sure, and I am sick of those as well. Gimme Star Ocean, Silent Hill, Valkyria Chonicles, Metal Gear...

I thought Brazilians were born with a soccer ball. You must be a rebel...
