Forums - Gaming - 720p vs 1080p, Does Resolution matter? - A Utilitarian Perspective

Just going to put this here as a mere point of reference.
NOTE: This chart is not an exact approximation nor an exact science, it's just a general guideline to where the AVERAGE person loses gains in higher resolution. If you beat the chart, well done. I myself can't but I do have poor enough eyesight

Resolution is basically like a canvas for a painting. 1080p is like bigger canvas than 720p. That's the only property of resolution. However, obviously the larger an image the more detail is able to be put in which is generally why 1080p is better than 720p. But like in pictures I posted earlier, there's a lot you can already do with the space given so for me, that's the priority. A sharper image with greater depth of colour and saturation is more nessecary than just having a more dense PPI.

I would much rather see a game in 1080p still. It's just hard to tell what resolution a game is in the first time I see it is what I mean. I'd notice if I got on battlefield 4 and it was at lower than 1080p. 720p basically just looks like something has been rubbed all of the screen. And by the way, the difference between 1080 and 720 is almost the exact same ratio as 720 vs 480.

And as I said in my OP, higher resolution is obviously preferable. If I have both PS4 and X1, I would likely get the multiplat game that looks shaper and/or runs smoother.

Now you're implying you can easily tell when you're looking at 720p or 1080p. Perahps you've trained your eyes well, but you're not the average consumer.

Guessing if you're looking at 720p, 900p, or 1080p is difficult. But 480p is clear as day.

PS4 being more powerful by a significant margin, were talking a GPU that thats 33% more powerfuland a ram set up which is much faster then xbox one, unless you don't believe in specs and belive in magical hidden powers there is now doubt that the ps4 will it run  that much better.

How did you get this 33% figure? The practical & perceived performance difference is a issue but the theoretical performance gap is definitely not 33%. The most quoted and common differential is 50%. Since PS4 has 50% more compute units (XB1 being 100, PS4 would be 150). Maybe you're talking about from PS4's perspective as XB1 has only 2/3 performance of PS4 (100/150), which implies a 33% lower performance. But if you are referring to what PS4 has on top of XB1, it's a bit more complicated. That sub-50% stories started when MS overclocked both the CPU and the GPU on the XB1. Roughly, they overclocked them by 10%. Well, the CPU overclock is meaningless because we know that the PS4 CPU is still faster (or at least as fast as) the XB1. The increase in GPU speed should indeed improve the speed of XB1 but will it really decrease to below 50%.

Initially PS4 had at least 50% more raw power (in some parts, up to 200%). Let's just say, "somewhat more than 50%". However, XB1, due to the hypervisor and the additional Metro in the background reserves around 10% of power to the machine (we pretty much how this works from Windows 8.1), so the difference is even larger. The GPU overclocking is barely there to give that borrowed performance back to the machine so that the performance gap will go back to the goold old "somewhat more than 50%".

In any case, the raw theoretical performance gap is no less than 50% between XB1 and PS4, not 33% or 40% or 45% as some may suggest. However, that's not the major concern. That kind of difference is tolerable, and would imply 40-45 fps for XB1 vs 60 fps for PS4, or 1080p vs 900fps with the same frame rate, but the gap today is much more drastic than that. And the reason is the MEMORY SPEED.

I suggest you to read this:

If the Xbone was $100 less than I could forgive it a little. The fact is it costs $100 more for objectively inferior hardware compared to the PS4. And if resolution doesn't matter why bother getting a new console?

Because the games I like are on it? Ever thought about that?

If I liked to sit in frony of a screen and drool over polished polygons, I would've invested close to $1000 on a more productive platform (gaming rig) that has much more flexibility (upgrades).

there are great  exclusives on both consoles, although i prefer sony's exclusives, would have gotten a X1 if roles were reveresed. it's all about the best value for me and the consumers and thats why ps4 is crushing X1 in sales at the moment.

Ok... Ryse is still the best looking game on the next gen consoles and it is on the inferior hardware.

I'm going to use your words here:

"Your perception of better is very relative/personal and you should keep that in mind."

Ryse is the best looking game for you, Killzone Shadow Fall is for me. We both wouldn't be wrong to say that but is hard to compare them because they are different games in a difference genre if they were multiplats it would be a more fair comparison.

Genre doesn't have anything to do with discussion between KZ and Ryse, because both target realism. If they were multiplats is not the right answer because most games developed exclusively to X1 reveal higher graphic fidelity than the ones produced to be multiplat.

Genre is important because you can't compare directly a Gran Turismo game (which targets realism) with Ryse, different genre so they both take diferent things in consideration like the number of enemies, AI, enviroment, distance, etc.

Even Ryse is only 900P and 30 FPS while Shadow Fall is 1080P 30FPS thats no small feat to pull that extra resolution. You can compare Forza with Driveclub in a few weeks (taking in account that Driveclub has more dev time of course) but for now Xbox has exclusives in genres that Sony don't and vice versa.

I take multiplats as my point of reference because both machines have X86 sctructure but PS4 has superior harware and thats why multiplats achive better resolution.

I acknowledge that Im not the same as the average consumer. But the difference is still very clear and apparent.
