Graphically, no. As far as content, personality, and polish--quite possibly. I'm like you. I didn't expect it to be so good. To be honest, I didn't even really want the game. I only recently got DKCR and that was for the 3DS. I have to say Tropical Freeze is a joy to play!

Given a choice to own one or the other, my heart goes with Mario. That game is more fun and accessible while DKC requires my full attention and relexes. I'm not as spry as I used to be. Really impressed so far, though.

My Pro Controller had been gathering dust for over a year now (Wii U Game Pad ftw!) but I had to break it out for this game and it was up to the task. Casual gamers avoid DKCR like the plague. It'll probably frustrate you. If your skills are up to par, this game is a thrill. I'll have to wait until I finish to post a fair comparison, though. It's like back in the day when SMW2:YI and DKC released at almost the same time. It's too close to call right now.

I'm not far enough into Tropical Freeze to tell. 3D World is a hell of a high standard, but if Tropical Freeze is able to top the amazing DKCR...

I do not own a Wii U (yet, will buy one as soon as Nintendo drops the tablet or makes it smaller) but I did not like DKC Returns on Wii at all, so I will not get Tropical Freeze. Nothing can beat the original DKC2 and for me DKC2 is the best 2D jump & run ever created, it also had the best soundtrack in any game which was even better than Chrono Trigger.

Just unlocks concept art, might add to completion % is all else.
