Most of the characters that Nintendo has published a game for on the Wii-U (Mario, Donkey Kong etc.), are not what I would call "forgotten".
Nintendo is trying to stay true to itself, which is admirable. Unfortunately, that isn't going to get them too far, as the industry is more interested in FPS and TPS than any other type of genre. Nintendo has always lacked in creating these type of games with the exception of a few.
