Weekly Hardware Chart 15th February 2014

PlatformN. AmericaEuropeJapanGlobal
49,527 43,379 40,211 141,577
51,705 55,000 N/A 124,314
18,939 21,578 10,639 64,239
34,190 10,562 N/A 48,032
7,810 11,646 17,767 42,074

19,327 9,555 310 31,070
1,837 6,977 2,971 16,355
7,667 6,389 193 15,657

The generation to generation in each market is very interesting.

EU: 360 to X1 - 9.5K to 10.5K, PS3 to PS4, 21.5K to 55K

NA: 360 to X1 - 19.3K to 34.1K, PS3 to PS4, 18.9K to 51.7K

In Europe we see Microsoft with X1 and 360 at parity while Sony's PS4 is well over double its predecessor.

In North America Microsoft is doing better nearly doubling, but compared to Sony's tripling it pales in comparison.

Even as a Sony optimist in this I really thought after the DRM 180 Microsoft could hold the status quo.  That price difference is killing them right now and I really do not see the gap shrinking anytime soon.

Hi everyone :)

Through these last few months i've been collecting data from various souces such as; NPD and Vgchartz and I have to say, the numbers i've come up with are close to those of NPD and Vgchartz, but I find mine to be more accurate.

Here take a look.

Oh. Then what was your point? There's no denying that most of the apparent "contraction" is due to Nintendo's recent fall from grace after enjoying a few short years at the top of everything.

3rd party publishers failing again and again to make a viable profit on Nintendo's consoles, while many of them enjoy massive successes on MS and Sony's.

Yet here you are saying MS and Sony are to blame. I don't get your logic.

Mummelman said that: And guess which manufacturer will contribute the most to the coming market contraction?

I was saying that this industry is dying for other reason: High costs.

So really not very relevant to the thread then? I thought you were basing it on this week's hardware sales.

Of course i am!! With sales like this weeks, do you think any third party can make a profit?

I would love to have a look but its broken :(

The console market isn't dying so much as the economy hasn't approved and there is less funds to be spent.
Also there will be some sales loss to tablets and such but I think this generation can have as good if better sales for at-least one contender.

I hope that square gets the memo after seeing FF 13-3 outsold by lego movie.

FF sold more, though, so they have to wait a bit for the memo.

In the meantime they might look at FF sales compared to Bravely Default and decide more FF games are in order.

i see who your arguing with but c'mon! BD is a new ip thats doing pretty damn well and your comparing it to the all mighty FF (even if Lightning Returns is the worse

BTW They are making more BD so there is that :p (im not arguing with you though, just defending a good game!)

You said that the numbers were "bad news for Sony" and they just aren't. Who's numbers are comparing the real numbers to? Who thought the PS4 was going to have a better January and February than the Wii? It sounds more like someone just preditced wrong than this being an issue for Sony.

When did I say that the numbers are bad news for Sony ? These numbers are half decent and it's falling out of our expectations.

"This doesn't sound good for the PS4 ..." That was your first post on this thread. Which is equal in meaning to "This sounds bad for the PS4"

You've also yet to explain whos expectations the PS4 is falling short of.

That's wrong but I can see people getting that expression so I should clarify there for moment to say that the PS4 isn't doing good or bad and is instead doing decent although with a slight balance towards the bad side.

It's fallen short of everyone's expectations on this forum seeing as how people are running around screeming undertracked which means that there's alot of panicking or their either damage controlling the situation at hand.

Well no, that's actually what that means. "doesn't" is a contraction of "does not". "Not" being an auxilery word used to turn a phrase to it's negative. In this case "Good" would be the affected word which in it's negative turns into "bad".

How is the second best January ever (with February likely to follow) "decent although with a slight balance towards that bad"?

Once again, who's numbers are you going off of? Who said it was going to outsell the Wii in January and February? Please, let me know. VGchartz has also been consisently undertracking the PS4 so why would it change all of a sudden?

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

People called me crazy when I said Wii U and Xbox 1 will both have 35m lifetime sales.. Crazy like a fox!

Also, Yay, Bravely Default! I really like it. Deserves those sales fo sho

8th gen predictions. (made early 2014)
PS4: 60-65m
WiiU: 30-35m
X1: 30-35m
3DS: 80-85m
PSV: 15-20m

Wii U is released in about 400% more countries than the Xbox One which means the Xbox One is actually doing four times better than the Wii U! Go Xbox One!!!

your swinging a statement thats nowhere close of being true. You might like your X1 but its doing terrible like WiiU (just not to that extreme extent)

Also like others said X1 in japan wont make an overall difference and other countries its not released yet will help out for maybe there first weeks but overall not as those are mostly Sony Domination areas.

Console.... industry..... dying.....
This model does not work, wake up people!!

Lol, industry dying because it goes back to PS2 era ?

You seem to be obsessed with the PS2 era.

With this gen prices, something like the PS2 era will destroy the videogame industry. Or do you seriously believe that third parties can survive with only one succesfull console?

one console with a large active userbase would be better than 3 consoles with a small active userbase each.  ports, unnessisary code branches, and the increased QA time associated with that will be eliminated once wiiU and xbone support are completely dropped increasing profitability by lowering development costs.  so as long as ps4's active user base > ps3 + 360 + wii's active userbase things will be coming up roses for third parties.

Hahaha. So you are saying monopoly is good for the industry?
Let me wake you up: Monopoly is the worst thing that could ever happen to ANY industry, because it´s the consumer who looses.

But we will see competition between developers. It is a not a closed monopoly, like we will only see games with content that Sony want. Nintendo did that a long time ago, restricting violent games on Super Nintendo. Those were times when more kids played videogames than adults. I don't remember seeing this kind of thing on PS1 or PS2 era, and i think almost every owner of one of those sytems was very, very happy. I don't like hardware competition. I want to see more software competition, it is the only way to play better games. Focus on one architecture and develop the best game you can. And we gamers won't have discussions about resolution, fps, textures and so on.
