Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So, DKC Tropical Freeze didn't move consoles

DKC Tropical Freeze is a mainstream game

It should have sold better 156 47.85%

Sales proves nothing 76 23.31%

Sales = Metacritic 27 8.28%

I wanted DK64-2 62 19.02%

Total:321

DKC:TF is a better DKC Returns and do you really want to buy a console for an updated game when the PS4 release is just around the corner. I think DKC:TF is a great game and I will play it but it's not a reason for the Japanese people to buy it when they are still waiting for the PS4 and the advertisement wasn't the best, too... I think there will be higher numbers in Europe and in NA. And of course it is a Jump'n'run AGAIN! They should make a new Metroid before it is too late (F-Zero, Star Fox,...). But no, I thin at E3 Nintendo will show us another Mario spin off -.-

I don't hate Microsoft, I don't hate PC,
I don't prefer Sony, I don't prefer Nintendo.
...Ok, I love Nintendo but this is something about tolerance, ok?

I'm a gamer with one of the greatest hobbies and I want to share this greatness with everyone.

The problem with NIntendo is that Nintendo compared to others does not generate hype.

I agree that Hype is bullshit but in todays society where decisions are not made based on ones brain but on ones easily impressiveness (for lack of better word) HYPE needs to be generated even if its just to be on the same level of attention others are.

That reminds me of how actually every Beer out there is a Premium Beer...... I mean really how premium can it be when everything is Premium???
When everyone is labeling their beer "Premium Beer" even if its just a shitty one the brewery that actually makes Premium Beer without advertising it as such will end up with a problem. (add some cheap fake-gold looking label and voila people think you are something special...)

Nintendo tries to mimic other companies with adding streamlined shit to their games but the one thing they NEED to do which is hyping their stuff (even if its a shitty business practice) they do not. I mean seriously just look at The Last Guardian it was announced in the 1920s and people still talk about it. So announce a new game even if its still 5 years away who cares. Talking about future games is better than talking about the lack of games.

But tbh I was expecting DK to not move alot of consoles. I doubt it was even intended to do so.  It was just a "cheap to make" game that wont "waste" as much ressources as a real 3D game that costs 10x as much. Because making a 3D Metroid for 3m people when NIntendo is NEW to HD development would have burned more money.  So smaller releases (thats also the reason NSMBU came out before 3D World) will increase the Userbase  (small) step by step and when enough people are out there the big guns will be fired.

But lets wait for the  DK wil save the WiiU stuff before it launched everywhere. Japan alone is no indicator of a Games success.

P.S. how the hell is DK a mainstream game rofl? Its the complete opposite.

You know, this game debuted in Japan better than Zelda or 3D world did in Japan

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

If that were true, then why is the PS4 selling well? In terms of gameplay and controls, the PS4 and it's games do nothing new, all it has is better visuals.

It's not just against the competition that it needs to differentiate itself. It needs to differentiate itself from the Wii as well. People don't see the most powerful gaming console on the market right now when they see the Wii U. Because it's not. They see an update to a console that has delivered the same content not so long ago.

I love Nintendo. I love my Wii U. But it's library of games right now, as well as the one coming soon is nothing but updates from games that were released not so long ago on the Wii. Hardcore Nintendo fans won't complain about that, because for the most part, that's what they expect from Nintendo. But people on the fence? They'll go for the slighly more expensive console because it offers a better promise for the future. Nintendo needs to differentiate themselves from that with content that's unique to the Wii U. Not only unique to Nintendo. That was already the case with the Wii, and people already played those games. SM3DW is to me the best Mario game since... ever. But it's also very similar to SM3DL on the 3DS. DKCTF looks excellent, but it's mostly an HD update to DKCR. Mario Kart? Same...

They need something new and fresh. Not just HD updates. That's my take on it. You're free to disagree.

I do somewhat agree with you.

But why does Nintendo need to differentiate with themselves but other companies don't? I mean Killzone: SF is the same as Killzone 3 with better graphics. AC IV is the same as the previous ones, heck is even on the PS360. Call of Duty: Ghost, same old story. The only "new" thing that comes to mind is Knack, and if we go by popular opinions, is a very sub-par game.

The industry has shown that consumers don't care when things are the same, so why is Nintendo any different? the only explanation I can come up with is that graphics are more important that gameplay, which as a gamer, makes me very sad.

I have a theory as to why, but you're not going to like it. Ninty has to differentiate themselves, because they CANNOT compete with the other two in the red ocean fight. IMHO that audience does not take Ninty seriously and hasnt since probably the N64.

No you are wrong consumers do not care about graphics, if that was the case why did WIi, Ps2 and PS1 won. Games. Ninty fans are fine with playing updateintd versions of the same games, everyone is like that the problem with ninty consoles is they miss alot of games. Big ones like GTA and they have been missing these games for years. Why would someone who doesnt particular care for Ninty games buy Wii U? Of course they'll buy the other two they know they will get the games.

I feel like it's just too many side scrollers. As good a game as donkey kong may be, the genre has been over saturated to the point where a great game comes and nobody wants it. Come on Nintendo! Stop playing it safe! Take at least ONE risk, branch out and do something new!

What's next on the chalkboard?

Smash, Kart, Pricedrop

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

Whoever is in charge of Business Intelligence at Nintendo needs to be fired. This is just ridiculous.

Mario Kart 8.

On May 30th.

I fear the day you´ll be making a thread that says "So, MK8 didn´t move as many consoles as expected" or something like that :(

June 7, 2014. Mark it on your calendar.

I'll just re-post what I posted in the Media Create thread as its probably more relevant here:

Congratulations to Mr. Iwata, Mr. Genyo Takeda, and everyone else on Nintendo's board of directors.

You've successfully made the first Nintendo console that can't even sell Nintendo software (let alone 2nd or 3rd party content).

Kudos, because it takes real effort to be that out of touch with the marketplace. But hey, at least you're "unique". Maybe you can proactively announce you're taking a pay cut for the next fiscal year while you're at it.

This isn't the fault of EAD or Retro or Platinum Games ... they are delivering good content ... Nintendo's management has f*cked this console up so badly beyond repair from day 1. Mario Kart 8 is doing nothing but providing a temporary boost and then will probably end up being the lowest selling console Mario Kart.
