I'll just re-post what I posted in the Media Create thread as its probably more relevant here:

Congratulations to Mr. Iwata, Mr. Genyo Takeda, and everyone else on Nintendo's board of directors.

You've successfully made the first Nintendo console that can't even sell Nintendo software (let alone 2nd or 3rd party content).

Kudos, because it takes real effort to be that out of touch with the marketplace. But hey, at least you're "unique". Maybe you can proactively announce you're taking a pay cut for the next fiscal year while you're at it.

This isn't the fault of EAD or Retro or Platinum Games ... they are delivering good content ... Nintendo's management has f*cked this console up so badly beyond repair from day 1. Mario Kart 8 is doing nothing but providing a temporary boost and then will probably end up being the lowest selling console Mario Kart.

Right on the money (unlike Nintendo)

Well, if 3D World didn't move consoles, this wasn't going to. But there was still a bit of hope because there could be Mario fatigue and DKC games are rarer. It's sad to see, but again let's not act like Metroid would have been any different (especially in Japan). Mario Kart is the only thing that can move consoles at this point, and it might not be that many.

I bought it, its a great game! But I'm a minority in wiiu owners it seems

Metroid would've bombed even worse and an original Retro IP probably even worse still. That's the sad part.

Until Nintendo stops being cute and simply just gives in and makes a console the Western consumer + third parties want, they are done in this console business. They are going to have a tiny niche where they are going to have to make a profit off games with increasing development costs and that is a recipe that doesn't work.

Other M first week was 45k

So, you can guess.

And I agree, a Metroid HD could have generated more hype than another DK.

I meant a Metroid Prime made by Retro. Not one by Team Ninja that attempted to butcher the entire franchise.

That's what I mean. Even Other M opened bigger than DK. Now a true Prime HD could have generated more hype and maybe more sales.

Metroid Prime 3 sold 32k on its first week in Japan.

The only good thing now is when Bayonetta 2 and X eventually come out and bomb, at least they have the "hey even Donkey Kong, Pikmin 3, Wii Fit, W101, bombed and even Mario is having a tough time" excuse so there's no expectation on these games to have to perform on this lame duck console.

That might be the saving grace for getting a third Bayonetta or Xeno game greenlit because Nintendo can't possibly blame the developers when everything on the system is underperforming in the way that they cut ties with Silicon Knights and Factor 5 once their games sales declined.

What's next on the chalkboard?

Mario Kart 8.

On May 30th.

I fear the day you´ll be making a thread that says "So, MK8 didn´t move as many consoles as expected" or something like that :(

June 7, 2014. Mark it on your calendar.

Done!...it'll be a gloomy Saturday.

On the bright side, Wii U games are cheap on Amazon thanks to all the flops. Wonderful 101 for 20 bucks!

This game could have sold way more if Nintendo tried to push the game. So far the only game I have seen them give a damn about was 3D World, and even that advertising push was rather soft. I think the Wii U is beyond saving now. Nintendo attitude towards the console is whats hurting it the most and I believe they will drop software support for the console in 2017, or even earlier than that. Nintendo seems to think that all they need to do is release something, tell no one about it and it will sell millions.

Donkey Kong Country Returns for Wii sold about 170K units in its first week in Japan. This was in December and the Wii instaled base base in Japan was already at 11m.

If DKC Tropical Freeze managed to sell 40K in February with a Wii U instaled base of about 1.6m, then I'd say that it did pretty good.

Of course it didn't move any consoles. Most games, even the best ones, don't move consoles just by themselves, and it is unrealistic to expect that to happen (especially just after the holiday season).
