Metroid would've bombed even worse and an original Retro IP probably even worse still. That's the sad part.
Until Nintendo stops being cute and simply just gives in and makes a console the Western consumer + third parties want, they are done in this console business. They are going to have a tiny niche where they are going to have to make a profit off games with increasing development costs and that is a recipe that doesn't work.
