Forums - Gaming - PS4 Sales Surpass 5.3 Million Units Worldwide as of February 8

The momentum has not stopped and Japan will provide another boost in a couple weeks. Honestly it may be Summer before getting a PS4 is no big deal in the various markets it is in. Sony is doing everything right and setting itself up for a very successful generation.

Really good tracking by VGC. Am I the only one thinking X1 sales are crappy as hell and that PS4 sales don´t feel to impressive?

How PS4 sales are not impressive? It is 5.3m in 2 months and 3 weeks... close to 1 million ahead Wii at the same time... it by a long margin the fastest selling console ever.

Phenomenal number if you account it is having supply issues yet.

Well, I am one of those that still believe the 8th gen will come short of the 7th gen in every way, so I might be overly critical :P.

I am looking at it this way:

At the end of december, PS4 stood at 4.2 million sold through, which almost cetrainly matches the shipped numbers since demand was so high. At the end of december 2006, Wii shipments stood at 3.19 million (including Japan). At the end of march, Wii shipments stood at 5.84 million, meaning they shipped 2.65 million units during the first three months. This means that PS4 needs to ship another 1.35 million units between now and march 31st in order to keep the same distance to Wii.

They might do it thanks to the release in Japan, but I will remain skeptical until proven otherwise. And, I hope I am wrong and the 8th gen grows considerably above the previous one, but it doesn´t look like it now. And the problem is, if PS4 continues to grow and thrive, without the other too growing aswell, the whole industry will suffer and sadly drag Sony down in the end aswell.

Dec 28th to Feb 8 was 42 days and Sony sold 1.1 million. Feb 8 to March 31 is 51 days. Even ignoring the release in Japan the PS4 would do another 1.34 million if it kept the same pace in the west. I think it's safe to assume the distance between the PS4 and Wii will grow before the end of the quarter.

If the PS4 can continue this momentum it may end up near PS2 numbers. Crazyness. I would've never thought that 3 or so years ago

I swear that I saw people in this website saying PS4 wouldn't reach 5M until march because it didn't have enough games for it.

Some people are still claiming "wait until after the launch hype dies off", it's been 3 months since launch and hype hasnt died down.

It can't last forever. I'm still convinced that console gaming is going to die before too long

You couldn't be convinced in something more wrong. With the success of the PS4, the future of console gaming is secured up until the next generation. So we have 6 more years out of it atleast.

Boom!!!

Did I do it right?

Cereal, amazing sales. It should easily surpass 6.0m by the end of the month.

My definition of "before too long" is probably not clear, I give it one more generation, but I don't buy into PS4 achieving PS2 sales. So many of those PS2 owners will just play on iPads (to my infinite sadness)

Anyway, neither of us are right or wrong yet.
